In August last year, Corey LaJoie signed a contract extension with Spire Motorsports. Although the duration of the extension wasn't specified, it was reported to be a "multi-year" deal.
However, with the recent announcement from Spire of signing Rodney Childers as the crew chief of the #7 team, one reaction sent LaJoie's future into a momentary whirlwind.
Reacting to the Childers announcement post on X, NASCAR Prophecy weighed in on LaJoie's future.
"With no mention of the driver it makes me wonder. I know Corey is under a multi-year contract with spire but this raises a lot of questions for me. Could the #7 car go to Zane Smith paired up with Rodney Childers? I think there is more to this story. To be continued," the reaction read.
However, this post was quickly deleted by NASCAR Prophecy, and another NASCAR insider, Kelly Crandall, gave a definitive answer on the future of Corey LaJoie with Spire.
Crandall was asked by a fan whether LaJoie was under contract with Spire for next season.
"Yes. The release says Childers will crew chief the 7 team and Corey LaJoie," she replied.
Corey LaJoie insisted he had work to do with Spire after his extension last year
Following his contract extension announcement last season, Corey LaJoie opened up on his optimistic viewpoint for Spire's future.
LaJoie further recalled that when he joined Spire, it wasn't as big as it is at present.
"I still feel like I’ve got a lot of work to do there and a lot a lot of stuff personally to learn and grow and just continue to evolve,” LaJoie said. “Because, you know, when we built this thing, when we started, there was literally zero employees. Like none. There was a vision that Jeff and T.J. had, and they had some connections with (Hendrick Motorsports owner) Rick (Hendrick) and they had some connections with (Chip) Ganassi (Racing) at the time to get cars, and we didn’t really know what would materialize — where we would get pit crews from and this and that," LaJoie said as per NASCAR.
The #7 driver said that he trusted Spire with the direction they wanted to go and the place they wanted it to reach. LaJoie added that he takes a lot of pride in the faith his team has put in him.
After signing Rodney Childers as the new crew chief of the #7 car, Spire Motorsports is seemingly aiming to get even better. Co-owner Jeff Dickerson claimed in a press release Childers is "one of the best" in the garage, and with him, they will get better from the moment he walks into their shop.
LaJoie's current crew chief Ryan Sparks, who has been in that role since 2020, will move to the role of Spire’s official Competition Director from 2025 onwards. It'll be interesting to see where Spire Motorsports goes with the team of Corey LaJoie and Rodney Childers.
So far in his Cup season, LaJoie is winless and has 4 finishes inside the top 5 since his first full-time season in 2019. On the other hand, Rodney Childers has won a Cup championship and 40 races.
