David Gilliland has been retired from full-time racing, but he still competes part-time in select events. He occasionally races in the ARCA Menards Series East and West and Truck Series, driving the #1 Toyota Tundra for his team, TRICON Garage.

Over the past few years, David Gilliland has participated in select truck and ARCA races, often stepping in when his team needed an experienced driver or when a unique opportunity arose. However, he has not made any starts in the 2024 season.

David Gilliland competed in the NASCAR Cup Series from 2006 to 2018. Over his Cup career, Gilliland became known as a strong contender at superspeedway races. He has never won at Cup level, but notable Cup career highlights include his pole-winning performance in the 2007 Daytona 500 with Robert Yates Racing and his career-best finish of P2 at Talladega Superspeedway in 2013.

The 48-year-old earned eight top-10 finishes and three poles in 333 starts in the Cup Series. His one of the most memorable moments came in 2006 when he won an Xfinity race at Kentucky Speedway with Clay Andrews Racing. The victory catapulted the Riverside, California, native into the NASCAR spotlight and led to opportunities in the Cup Series.

In 53 races in the Xfinity Series, Gilliland scored a win and three top-10 finishes. While at NASCAR’s third-tier series, he earned six top-10 finishes and two poles in 22 races.

David Gilliland’s transition from driver to team ownership

Gilliland has transitioned from being a full-time driver to becoming a team owner. He founded David Gilliland Racing (DGR) in 2017, and later rebranded as TRICON Garage in 2023 after partnering with Toyota Racing Development (TRD).

TRICON Garage is a prominent team in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series and grassroots motorsports divisions like the ARCA Menards Series, ARCA West, and CARS Tour. The organization fields five entries in Truck Series. Under Gilliland’s leadership, the team has fielded entries for several talented young drivers.

David Gilliland’s family has been involved in racing, as his son Todd Gilliland is an active NASCAR Cup Series driver for Front Row Motorsports, continuing the family legacy in stock car racing. While his David’s father was also a NASCAR driver.

Even though Gilliland is not involved in full-time racing, his presence in NASCAR is as strong as ever. As a team owner, he continues to play a vital role in shaping the future of stock car racing.
