NASCAR driver William Byron has recently expressed frustration on an upsetting performance in the Go Bowling At The Glen playoff race at Watkins Glen International. He was involved in an on-track incident in the final stage of the race, leading to a disappointing finish.
Byron pilots the #24 Chevrolet for Hendrick Motorsports, competing full-time in the Cup Series. In a career spanning seven years, he has secured 25 race wins across all NASCAR divisions, 13 of which came in the Cup Series. Moreover, the North Carolina native is a former Xfinity Series champion (2017) and was also crowned the Truck Series regular-season champion in 2016.
Byron started the second playoff race just outside the top ten, in P11. In lap 84 of the race, he was in a close battle to make his way into the top 15, where he found Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano. Byron was trying to make a pass from the outside line when Logano bumped into the back of Keselowski's car, which made the #6 lose balance. Keselowski then slammed into the front right of Byron's #24 Chevy, sending him crashing into the wall.
Here's a look at the incident:
The contact led to a P34 finish for the HMS driver, dropping him to P10 in the driver's standings. Following the end of the race, he shared a puzzling message on his X.
Byron was the defending champion at Watkins Glen, as he won the race last year after leading 66 laps in the Go Bowling At The Glen, where he outperformed RCR's Kyle Busch to secure his fifth win of the season.
Although Byron is still in the top 10, the #24 driver will have to pull up his socks for the final round of 16 race at Bristol Motor Speedway next weekend, and advance to the next round of the playoffs.
“It was a bummer”: William Byron disappointed with Brad Keselowski’s role in disappointing result at Watkins Glen
William Byron and Brad Keselowski's on-track incident ruined the race for the HMS driver, as he navigated his way through the field to join the front runners. After the race ended, he shared his thoughts on his performance at Watkins Glen International.
In an interview with Fox Sports' Bob Pockrass, Byron said:
"I don't know, like the #22(Logano) and the #6(Keselowski) were kind of staggered too wide and I was going to get to the outside of the 22, and it looked like the #6 kind of was loose and overcorrected back to the left and got us. So yeah, it was a bummer but had a good car once we made some adjustments and kind of got us back in the ball game and I thought we were going to finish probably backside to the top 10, and that was going to be pretty good."
Meanwhile, Keselowski's RFK Racing driver Chris Buescher took the lead from road course expert Shane van Gisbergen in the final lap of the race and drove down Victory Lane at Watkins Glen.
