Kyle Larson is currently in Las Vegas for Sunday's NASCAR Cup Series race, the South Point 400. The 2021 Cup Series champion has won the most races this season. He sits at the top of the grid, aiming to bag his second championship title.
In the meantime, NASCAR set out to ask the drivers about their favorite gambling game. The question was: blackjack or poker? For Larson, it was Blackjack, however, it seemed like the Elk Grove native is yet to get the hang of it.
"Blackjack but it kicked my a** all week so..." Kyle Larson smiled.
Kyle Larson drives the No. 5 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 full-time for Hendrick Motorsports. He is currently in his fourth year with the Chevy team. The veteran racer has the best career average finish at LVMS: says an official statement by Hendrick Motorsports.
Furthermore, Larson is a three-time winner and the defending champion at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. He won last year's South Point 400 and followed it up with another win in this year's Pennzoil 400.
If Larson wins Sunday's race, it would tie him with seven-time Cup Series champion, Jimmie Johnson, for the most number of wins at the 1.5-mile, trioval speedway. In 16 starts at LVMS, Larson amassed four top-10s and five top-5s, all of which are top-3 performances.
Fans can watch Larson in action on Sunday, October 20th from 2:30 pm ET onwards on NBC. Radio updates will be available on PRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.
Kyle Larson sheds light on his expectations for the Round of 8
Kyle Larson appeared in a NASCAR video uploaded on Instagram just a day ago and spoke about his expectations for this year's Round of 8. With two wins in two rounds, the Chevy star believes that his team's momentum is great ahead of Las Vegas, Homestead-Miami, and Martinsville.
"Yeah, great momentum for us for sure," Kyle Larson said. "Vegas is probably our best track. Homestead’s a track that I just love. Martinsville is a tricky place but we’ve been strong there."
Larson asserted his dominance at Homestead-Miami Speedway in 2022, leading a race-high 199 laps to win the race. However, 2023 witnessed a major upset for the 32-year-old. After a pit road incident with Ryan Blaney, Larson rammed his car straight into the sand barriers.
Hendrick Motorsports has been strong at Martinsville this year. Back in the spring race at the Virginian short-track, the top-3 finishes were delivered by Hendrick Motorsports drivers, with William Byron taking the win and Larson finishing narrowly behind him. Notably, Chase Elliott ended up third.
With that said, Larson has had his share of troubles this year with the most recent one coming during lap 56 of the Quaker State 400 at Atlanta Motor Speedway. With just five laps to go in the first stage, he crashed into the wall and exited the race early.
"I would love to start these rounds out a little better. Yeah, not good to start the rounds with stress. I would love to win one of these next three, set the tone for the round of 8," Kyle Larson added.
