Ricky Stenhouse Jr. recently shared his thoughts on Corey Day's highly anticipated debut in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series at Bristol this weekend. The veteran driver, who has previously competed against Day in sprint car races, praised the young driver’s composed demeanor on the track, noting that Day’s racing style bears a resemblance to Kyle Larson's early career moves.
While Stenhouse Jr. has not been able to qualify for playoffs this year, Day is gearing up to join the Truck Series, driving the #81 and #91 trucks for McAnally-Hilgemann Racing, with sponsorship from Hendrickmotorsports.com, over his next four races.
Talking to Bob Pockrass from Fox Sports, Stenhouse Jr. expressed his admiration for Day’s capabilities, saying:
"One thing I think is really good about Corey is he's super calm! It kind of reminds me of Kyle, he's calm. You know, super polite outside the race car when he gets in you can tell he kind of switches modes and I feel like he kind of really hangs it out but in a smart way. [...] It's big time going straight to a truck. He’ll all like it. I think he'll learn more in that than he will run at ARCA or late model races."
Corey Day didn't originally start on his motorsports journey with stock or dirt cars; he first ventured into racing with dirt bikes. However, an injury involving a broken arm during a competition brought his dirt bike racing stint to an abrupt end. After some time away from racing, he shifted gears and entered the world of sprint car racing in 2016, competing in the USAC Restricted Micro Sprints.
On Dec. 8, 2023, Day committed to racing full-time in the 2024 Kubota High Limit Racing Series, piloting the #14 car for Jason Meyers Racing. Further building on his racing portfolio, by April 2024, Day took to the track in Late Models, driving the #88 Chevrolet for JR Motorsports at Hickory Motor Speedway.
Kyle Larson lauds Corey Day- "He’s better than I am"
Kyle Larson, who has closely observed Corey Day's prowess within his own High Limit Racing series and the Midweek Money sub-series, where Day is currently ranked third. Larson lauded his impressive skills, saying that Day is essentially a younger version of himself, but even better than he was at his age. As Larson put his praise into words:
"He’s better than I am, or I was obviously at that age. He is in a lot better rides than I was at that age. His race craft, his maturity on the track, off the track, like all that, he’s really, really good. He can run harder than anybody on the race track and be in control. So, he’s definitely the next kid coming up that probably will make it."
Day reciprocates the admiration, aspiring to emulate Larson’s career footsteps. In addition to his NASCAR obligations, he is also preparing for a busy Thursday night; he is slated to make his second ARCA Menards Series start earlier in the evening.
