$3.2B worth (per Forbes) NBA legend Michael Jordan's co-owned team 23 XI Racing made it to the final round of NASCAR playoffs, earning their spot in the Championship 4 round for the first time since their debut in 2021. The #45 Toyota Camry driver, Tyler Reddick, won the Straight Talk Wireless 400 held on October 27, 2024, and advanced to the Championship 4 round.
Jordan was impressed by Reddick's astonishing performance in the race, as he dominated from the qualifying laps and won the pole position. He led Stage 1 of the race, finishing in first place, and then fell to fourth place by the end of Stage 2.
However, Reddick overtook Ryan Blaney in the final lap, shattering his chance to win the second race of the round of eight. After a celebratory burnout on the track, Jordan hugged Tyler Reddick in the middle of an interview, surprising him. NASCAR captioned the post:
"That's one happy boss."
Stewart-Haas Racing driver Chase Briscoe posted a tweet highlighting the moment and joined the 23XI Racing team in their celebration. He wrote:
"Today’s takeaways… @HomesteadMiami continues to be the best track on the schedule and it’s not even close and it’s so cool to see how pumped MJ is to be here."
Tyler Reddick celebrated his victory to the fullest on the victory lane with the team and had some energy drinks.
Ryan Blaney disappointed after Michael Jordan's 23XI star won the race in the final lap
The race at Homestead-Miami Speedway ended with an unexpected twist in the story, shattering Team Penske driver Ryan Blaney's chances of advancement to the Championship 4 round to defend his title. Michael Jordan's 23XI star, Tyler Reddick, changed the whole outcome of the race by gaining the lead in the last lap of the 267-lap race.
Blaney qualified for the race in P20 and was 0.229 seconds behind Tyler Reddick, the leader of the pack with a best time of 32.248 seconds and a top speed of 167.452 mph. Despite a slow start, the #12 driver made significant improvements in his standing and finished in fourth place.
The 30-year-old gained the lead in lap 266, and Michael Jordan's star took the high lane and snuck the victory from Blaney. In a post-race interview, the #12 driver expressed his disappointment over the last lap:
"I just didn't really have a good last lap. I didn't really get to the bottom like I wanted to, and then wanted to, and I kind of gave the 45 a little clean air, and then he just got a big shot by the 11 down the back. And I didn't know which way he was going to go. I want to see. I mean, it was like, time down, perfect for him. I'm like, getting to my bumper as soon as we got to the corner. And I thought, well, if I go in fast, like, kind of a couple ways off the wall, and kind of just slide up and be good." [00:00]
Michael Jordan's 23XI star Tyler Reddick leads the playoff standings after his win at the Homestead-Miami race. On the other hand, Ryan Blaney is in seventh place and requires 38 points to qualify in the top four drivers for the Championship 4 round at Phoenix Raceway.
