Denny Hamlin recently shared the extent of his knowledge of the situation with Stewart Haas Racing. Over the last few weeks, rumors of Tony Stewart's NASCAR team exiting the Cup by selling off their charters have only grown stronger.
After a recent report by Sports Business Journal which claimed that drivers and team members have started talking to other teams to land a job next season, Hamlin discussed what he knew of the situation.
“I mean, certainly there’s tons of rumors out there about what’s going on. I can’t speak to any of them for sure. But it seems like there’s going to be some movement around. But it's too early for me to speculate because these drivers are saying, 'We're racing for a job,' and who knows what the team members are thinking at this point, but surely we'll know something soon," Hamlin said. Hamlin believes that no one at SHR management would want to have "this cloud hanging" over their entire organization for the rest of the season.
After Denny Hamlin refused to speculate and only hinted at 'some movement' around SHR in the near future, his co-host Jared Allen wondered if it's normal for drivers and team members to not know what's going on in their own team, which is the case with SHR currently.
It's worth mentioning that Chase Briscoe recently claimed that every race for him feels like an audition, which sheds some light on the level of uncertainty at SHR right now.
But Hamlin was of the opinion that "speculation always happens" as he clarified that in SHR's case it is different because "this is an entire race team" which could be sold off at the end of this season.
He added, "I haven’t seen anything like this certainly but you know there’s some sensitivities likely around it to where you know they can’t say anything yet right?"
What would Denny Hamlin do if his own team was going through what SHR is going through?
Denny Hamlin's co-host Jared Allen asked the #11 driver that if his own team, 23XI Racing, was going through potentially major changes, would he care to tell Bubba Wallace or Tyler Reddick?
Hamlin claimed he would because he wouldn't want to leave his own team members "in the dark." However, he also noted a situation in which management would have to act contrarily.
"It might be because plans are fluid and you don't want to set anyone into a panic mode when in turn nothing will change. Everything is going to be status quo," Hamlin said. [1:10:20]
The 23XI Racing co-owner believes that in the case of SHR, the management is still considering their options, and that there would be news to tell when it will.
Hamlin added that with SHR, one simply has to "wait this out."
