Amid Kyle Busch's underwhelming performances so far, veteran NASCAR commentator Jeff Hammond made a bleak prediction regarding the remainder of RCR's season. During an appearance on "GoPRNLive", Hammon gave his thoughts on why RCR are currently struggling in the Cup Series.
So far this season, Kyle Busch has been winless so far, with only a couple of top 5 finishes to his name. Moreover, in the last 8 Cup races, the #8 driver has finished inside the top 20 only twice. In the case of Busch's teammate, Austin Dillon, the #3 driver hasn't managed to finish inside the top 5 even once this year and has finished in the top 10 twice.
This situation at Childress Racing convinced Jeff Hammond that the team hadn't lived up to their expectations so far.
"They looked so good and Kyle Busch looked like he had found a new breath of fresh air there at RCR. They just have not got on track no matter whether it's Kyle or whether it's Austin Dillon. I mean they just have not got anything going, especially at the Cup level," Hammond said. [00:26]
While Hammond felt that RCR's struggles in the Cup series would continue, he did, however, claim that RCR may be doing well in the Xfinity Series, and deemed them "dangerous" for the rest of the season.
"As far as Xfinity is concerned, look out, they're dangerous, they'll be dangerous all the way through the end of the year. But the Cup level, it's going to take a miracle, it's going to take somebody pulling a rabbit out of their hat, getting a win to get RCR at least a brief moment in the playoffs," he added.
"The problem isn't Kyle Busch": NASCAR journalist Alan Cavanna gives his take on the RCR driver's struggles
Speaking about Kyle Busch being 18th in points and Austin Dillon being 32nd, journalist Alan Cavanna claimed on GoPRNLive that the situation at RCR is "astonishing."
Cavanna said that to see Busch and Dillon that far down on the table is "unacceptable". He further talked about the unfortunate situation with the whole of RCR as an organization having a disappointing campaign, while Kyle Busch is in his prime as a driver.
"This is an off year for their entire organization and to see this happening in what should be Kyle Busch's prime, you just look at it and you think, the problem isn't Kyle Busch. Maybe you're starting to hear the frustration of it all but I would imagine I understand Kyle Busch's frusrration. When you have all this talent, when you've had all this ability, it should be the top of your career but you're struggling right now for mistakes that aren't really your fault," Cavanna said. [1:32]
Having said that, Cavanna mentioned that some of RCR's shortcomings in results may have been down to mistakes by Busch. But he claimed all the unfortunate incidents both from the team and the driver are compounding at this time of the year and made it difficult for them to achieve positive results.
