NASCAR Cup Series driver, Austin Dillon shared his smartphone preference and joked that only "someone weird" would be an Android user.
The Richard Childress Racing driver comes from a racing family, his grandfather Richard Childress owns the team, and his brother Ty Dillon also competes in NASCAR. During an October 2019 interview with The Athletic, Dillon revealed why he preferred an iPhone over Android devices.
"I’m an iPhone guy. I like the products, I feel like I know how to use them and I really think it’s annoying when you have a friend that doesn’t have an iPhone. You can’t iMessage and it turns the message green. That bothers me," Austin Dillon said (via NYTimes.com).
When told that only one NASCAR driver stated to using an Android phone, Dillon joked, “It’s gotta be someone weird" and later pointed out Team Penske's Austin Cindric fit the personality.
"Yes. Knew it. That would be great. Right up his alley. He thinks Macs are no good, probably, too," he added.
In 2019, Dillon missed the playoffs for the first time in three years. He won two pole positions at Talladega and Auto Club but had zero top-5 finishes. Dillon ended the season 21st in the final points standings.
"It’s mostly on purpose" - Austin Dillon on "jerk moves" on the racetrack
Austin Dillon compared bad driving on the road to what happens on the racetrack. In the same interview in 2019, he was asked if highway "jerk moves" affect him as much as NASCAR ones.
"I think there are similarities. On the way to the track this morning, a lady pulled out in front of me and I was like, 'Oh my gosh. That was close.' And I looked to see and was like, 'Well, maybe she’s just inexperienced or something,'" Austin Dillon said.
"But when it happens out here, you know they know what they’re doing and it’s mostly on purpose. Out on the road, it could just be a bad day or someone not paying attention," he added.
Dillon has become known for his aggressive driving on the track. The 34-year-old had one controversial win at Richmond Raceway in August 2024 where he broke a 68-race winless streak. However, he bumped Joey Logano out of the lead and Denny Hamlin into the wall later with aggressive moves on the last lap which ended up costing him a playoffs spot. Dillon ended the 2024 season in 25th place.
The 2011 NASCAR Truck Series champion will compete in the 2025 Cup Series in Richard Childress Racing's No. 3 Chevrolet with a new crew chief, Richard Boswell.
