Kyle Busch is on a 42-race winless streak since his victory at Gateway at World Wide Technology Raceway last year. Moreover, the Richard Childress Racing driver is on the verge of missing this year's playoffs. While some might be alarmed by the gravity of the situation, Bubba Wallace said highs and lows are part of racing.
This is Busch's first experience with a 40+ winless drought. Nothing has gone right for the two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion this season. The 39-year-old driver has faced adversity on various levels, be it on-track squabbles with fellow racers, pit road issues, or struggles with the car.
However, according to Wallace, all that is just the nature of competitive motorsports. Speaking to reporters, he said every driver has to endure both highs and lows throughout their career.
"It's motorsports. It's racing. Endure all the ups most of your time, right? So now you have to endure the downs and you have to learn how to navigate through them. I've been fortunate enough to do both; kind of ride around the middle. It's racing, gotta figure it out," Wallace said (at 2:30).
One of the reporters was curious if Bubba Wallace would try to go offensive on Busch, whom she called "weak," given the latter's lackluster season. Wallace responded:
"I wouldn't call Kyle Busch weak. It's still Kyle Busch. Were you calling (Joey) Logano week a couple weeks ago? Exactly. Those guys are champions for a reason. Definitely don't count them out."
With five races to go till the Round-of-16 opener at Atlanta Motor Speedway, Busch is 18th in the NASCAR Cup Series standings with 428 points to his name. He is 102 points behind the cutline. Bubba Wallace, on the other hand, is 27 points behind the provisional cutline.
Kyle Busch on why he chose not to confront Corey Lajoie after the Pocono incident
Kyle Busch initially said he would pay Corey Lajoie back for wrecking him out at Pocono Raceway last week. However, that might not happen this Sunday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway as Busch seems to have let it slide.
Busch wants his son Brexton to learn that not everything will go his way as he advances in his career. 8-year-old Brexton Busch is a budding speedster, who has amassed over 30 wins in Outlaw Karts, Bandoleros, Jr. Sprints, and Restricted Micros.
"Just showing him and telling him about things that are OK in instances in which when you’re racing together, you’re going to have close quarters, you’re going to have contact, things like that," Busch explained (via NASCAR). "But when you have instances in which you get drove over, then those are moments that aren’t acceptable as a race driver, whether you’re doing or receiving."
Kyle Busch will make his 700th Cup Series start in this year's Brickyard 400. He has two victories with Joe Gibbs Racing in the 400-miler at the iconic 2.5-mile racetrack (2014, 2015). Will the Richard Childress Racing driver finally be able to alter the course of his season at IMS? Only time will tell.
