Last weekend's NASCAR Cup Series Round of 8 race at Homestead-Miami Speedway saw Denny Hamlin and Ryan Blaney not get along in the smoothest fashion on the intermediate track.
In what was touted as a "hack-like" maneuver from the Joe Gibbs Racing driver, Blaney was certainly not the most impressed despite finishing in P2 during the event.
The reason behind Blaney's frustration was evident to the fans as Denny Hamlin proceeded to race the #12 Ford Mustang driver extremely hard on the final restart of the 4EVER 400.
Allowing fellow teammate Christopher Bell to increase his lead on the duo who lost time by fighting for track position amongst themselves, the #11 Toyota Camry TRD driver took to his popular podcast Actions Detrimental to voice his side of the story.
In what has been touted as the breakthrough season for Hamlin in terms of his championship contention, the Tampa, Florida native replied to Blaney's words and said:
“That’s two people racing, by the way, for the final four of a championship battle. It’s just interesting to me, given who is involved, people are like ‘why are you racing Blaney so hard?’ What are you talking about? We both barrel it off in there and next thing you know he’s right there on the right side."
Elaborating further on what was his gameplan as he tried a 'slide job'-esque move on his competitor, Denny Hamlin further added:
"What we’re trying to do is get a half car length ahead so we can say ‘okay, it’s my spot, concede, get in line and let’s go.’ That’s what I tried to do in 1 and 2 but the lap after that, I go in there, I’m going to go deep again. But as I gas up, he gasses up. So he’s saying ‘no you’re not, I’m going to fight you for this spot,’ so I let off and leave him plenty of room and we raced side-by-side again down the backstretch.”
Say what you will of how either Denny Hamlin or Ryan Blaney decided to race each other on the track, but the #11 Toyota driver does seem to have thrown caution to the wind this postseason.
Denny Hamlin looks back at his early retirement from the Homestead-Miami playoffs race
Even after passing Ryan Blaney on the track after a heated battle, Denny Hamlin's woes only got bigger as he hit the outside wall of the 1.5-mile-long track in an abrupt fashion.
He touched upon what he felt from behind the wheel and said on his podcast:
"The times I hit the wall earlier in the race, I don’t know that it was crazy hard. It wasn’t egregious and shouldn’t have broken a suspension part. If it didn’t break a toe link, it shouldn’t have broken anything else. We didn’t observe any data that was out of the blue so something was fractured."
Ryan Blaney and Denny Hamlin will be seen battling once again on track this weekend at Martinsville Speedway.
