Hendrick Motorsports Vice Chairman Jeff Gordon recently shared his response to an unheard story of Corey Day's initial recruitment phase. The 19-year-old Day signed a multi-year deal with the Rick Hendrick-owned organization in the development program.

Speaking with SiriusXM NASCAR Radio, Day opened up on the time when the four-time Cup Series champion Gordon dropped a text to the dirt racing sensation's father, Ronnie Day, a former Sprint car driver. The Clovis, California native, who didn't take the message seriously at that time, then asked for a photo of the Hall of Famer to make sure it was the "real Jeff Gordon."

"He[Jeff Gordon] asked if I'd be interested in running some stock car stuff. And my dad and I were both like, who, like, is this really Jeff Gordon? Like, we were, you know, kind of, we're unsure. So, my dad asked him to send a picture of himself to, you know, make sure it was a real Jeff Gordon. It wasn't a scam. And, you know, sure enough, it was and the rest is history."

Day's candid revelation on the talk show led to the 53-year-old Gordon saying:

"We're just glad you picked up the phone!"

Soon after Day's signing was made official, Spire Motorsports didn't waste any time disclosing its plans with the fomer. The rising star is set to compete in select Truck Series and ARCA Series races with the backing of HendrickCars.com. Moreover, Day will also take the reins of the #17 Chevrolet for HMS in the Xfinity Series.

Following the Hendrick Motorsports announcement of Corey Day, Rick Hendrick made his feelings known on scouting the dirt racing driver and the 2022 Chili Bowl Rookie of the Year. In an official press release by HMS, Hendrick said:

"When Kyle Larson and Jeff Gordon say someone is the real deal, it certainly gets your attention." Hendrick said. "Corey comes from a great racing family and in a short time has shown a level of talent that sets him apart.
"What he’s already accomplished at this point in his career speaks volumes, and it’s been impressive to see how quickly he’s adapted to pavement. We’re excited to welcome him to our team."

Corey Day will start his season with the inaugural ARCA Series Daytona race on February 15. He will then compete at Phoenix, Sonoma, and Kansas Speedway, driving the #77 for Spire Motorsports.

On the other hand, Day will compete in eight Truck Series, piloting the #7 Truck, as reported by renowned journalist Dustin Albino.

"Corey Day will compete in eight races for Spire, driving the No. 7 truck: Las Vegas, Homestead, Martinsville, Bristol, Rockingham, Nashville, IRP, Darlington."
