Alex Bowman, the driver of the #48 Chevy, looked back on his impressive road course stats during the NASCAR playoff media day as he prepared for the second race of the Round of 16 at Watkins Glen International. Bowman is currently a strong contender for the Cup Series championship.
"In an interview with Fox Sports journalist Bob Pockrass, Alex Bowman was asked if he knew which driver had accumulated the most points on road courses during the 2024 Cup Series season. After a brief pause to reflect on all the road course races, the 31-year-old Bowman guessed himself, but with some uncertainty.
"We've run COTA, Sonoma, Chicago...Me?," Bowman asked, with a hint of doubt.
"Yes!" replied Pockrass with enthusiasm.
Furthermore, the four-time Cup Series champion Jeff Gordon's driver added,
"It's gonna say like we didn't have a good day at Sonoma, but other than that we've been getting all of them."
The 31-year-old qualified for the playoffs because of his sole win this season at the Chicago Street Circuit, a road course. Additionally, he has produced one top-five finish at Circuit of Americas and a P15 finish at Sonoma Raceway. He earned 31 points from Go Bowling at the Glen. Starting in P4, Bowman finished the race in 18th place.
Bowman's strong road course performance makes him a top contender to capitalize on the next road course race at Charlotte Motor Speedway ROVAL, crucial for his playoff advancement, following his finish at Watkins Glen International.
"Need to do a lot of things better" - Alex Bowman reflects on the #48 Chevy team's performance
The Hendrick Motorsports driver Alex Bowman had a fifth-place finish in the first race of the 2024 playoffs at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Entering the Watkins Glen race, Bowman was positioned in sixth place in the playoff standings.
In a conversation with SiriusXM NASCAR Radio, reflected on the challenges and strategic shortcomings that contributed to his team's performance in recent races. He said,
"It's been a little bit of everything. We need to be faster but we also need to execute. Like Darlington in spring, we were terrible but we executed our way to an 8th place finish. Darlington in the fall, we struggled and we executed our way to a 19th place finish. So we need to do a lot of things better, across the board, myself included." [0:50]
As things stand, Bowman has only led 20 laps this season. However, this season, he has garnered seven top-5 and 13 top-10 finishes in 28 starts.
