Christopher Bell’s crew chief Adam Stevens recently sustained a serious injury to his knee. To help Stevens, Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) has made a special custom seat for him to use in the pit box. This will help him stay involved with the team during his recovery.
Stevens tore both of his patellar tendons in a diving accident while on vacation. He is disappointed about the injury, especially as he was on a break with his family. He is not able to bend his knees and will likely be away from the track for several weeks after surgery.
In this regard, the JGR team is working on a custom fit for the seat by cutting out layers of foam for extra comfort. Stevens has been testing different configurations of the newly designed seat and is expected to use the seat for the upcoming races.
This new setup will bring some changes for Bell's team as they prepare for upcoming races.
You can take a look at the seat mold in the video below:
It is still unclear when he will be back. In his absence, Chris Sherwood will take over as crew chief. The injury to his crew chief and the change could affect Bell’s performance in the races. It will be interesting to see how Sherwood adjusts to keep the team competitive.
Christopher Bell's NASCAR season so far
Christopher Bell is currently racing full-time in the NASCAR Cup Series for Joe Gibbs Racing in the No. 20 Toyota and part-time in the Xfinity and Truck Series. He won the 2017 Truck Series Championship.
Crew chief Adam Stevens has helped the 29-year-old Bell win three races this season. Bell finished third at the Daytona 500 and won races at Phoenix, Charlotte, and New Hampshire.
In a Coca-Cola 600 race at New Hampshire last month that was full of thrills and spills, with rain, darkness, and 14 cautions, Bell emerged as the race-winner. The race lasted over six hours owing to delays caused by rain, lightning, and a tornado watch. After starting strong, Bell won the race in overtime, with Chase Briscoe second and Josh Berry third.
"It was a tale of two different events—dry and wet. It was very dark towards the end...Once I got to the inside at three-wide down the front straightaway, I felt like I was in the position I wanted to be in to win the race," said Bell.
“I feel so bad for Sheldon. He’s been really really close to winning these things,” he added.
Bell currently stands in 8th with 651 points, including 7 top-5 and 12 top-10 finishes.
