Retired NASCAR driver and TV personality Kenny Wallace shared two difficult lessons he learned for disgruntled parents who watched their children compete in last weekend's Tulsa Shootout. On the heels of the event, parents of some of the racers expressed displeasure in the event's TV broadcast not shedding enough light on their kids.
Wallace addressed the matter in his "Coffee with Kenny" X video, a daily video the Missouri native posts to interact with his followers and discuss some of the newest topics in the racing world. The 61-year-old addressed the parents who were left heartbroken that their child didn't get as much TV time with the spotlight being on others like Brexton Busch and Owen Larson, sons of Cup Series stars Kyle Busch and Kyle Larson.
As a father of three daughters, Wallace went on to say he understands the pain that the parents felt as they just want their kids to get the spotlight they feel like they deserve. To try and help them, Wallace decided to share two lessons he's learned.
Before Kenny Wallace married his wife, Kim, the couple went to a Pre-Cana class, a course a soon-to-be-married couple takes to see if they're capable of being married. Wallace recalls a conversation with "Father John" at the time, and it was then he learned one of the tough lessons. Wallace said:
"Father John looked at me and he said, 'Kenny, what are you going to do for a living?' I was so excited I said, 'Oh, Father John, I'm going to be a race car driver.' He looked at me and says, 'Kenny, be careful. Competition will kill you.' One of the biggest lessons I've ever had in my life." [8:14 onwards]
The second lesson Wallace recounted was early in his racing career when he was searching for sponsorship. The nine-time Xfinity Series winner remembers going to TV executives and pleading with them to put him on television. The TV exec responded by saying Wallace needed to give them a reason to put him on TV.
Kenny Wallace related this to the Tulsa Shootout as his message to the disappointed parents was that they're up against thousands of other racers in the events, and only the top-notch racers will get the spotlight.
"When you go to the Tulsa Shootout, remember, you're against all odds," Wallace said. "You're going up against thousands. It's the toughest place." [12:53 onwards]
The youngest Wallace brother recently also announced his plans to return to racing in 2025 and shared it with his fans.
