As the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series heads to Chicago Street Course, former driver-turned-commentator Kevin Harvick shared his insights and picked the winner of this weekend’s race. Harvick went with a part-time Cup Series driver to take the checkered flag in Sunday’s (July 7) Grant Park 165 at Chicago Street Course.
On his eponymous “Kevin Harvick’s Happy Hour” podcast, the former Stewart-Haas Racing driver explored a detailed analysis of the driver he believes will be in contention to win at the Chicago Street race on Sunday.
According to Harvick, three-time Supercars champion Shane van Gisbergen is going to win again at Chicago. Van Gisbergen, who competes part-time in the Xfinity Series, is the defending winner of the Grant Park 165; he won the inaugural Chicago Street Race on his debut in 2023.
Predicting the 2024 Chicago Cup Series race winner on his podcast, Harvick said:
“You know who I’m picking, I think he’s going to win again. I think SVG is going to win again.”
Kevin Harvick also added Justin Haley as an interesting long shot to his prediction. Haley finished runner-up last year.
“I think the long shot is Justin Haley,”
Kevin Harvick’s co-host, Kaitlyn Vincie, is also going with Harvick’s pick to secure back-to-back wins.
While co-host Mamba Smith picked the Haley to win on Sunday, Smith said:
“I’m picking Justin Haley to win this race. He put himself into a situation last year to win it, and actually I changed my mind because you got me fired up because you used him as a secondary pick”
“Originally I was going to pick Tyler Reddick, because I thought it was redemption time, because he was actually the only one who could keep up with SVG, and he has ties to Chicago, Illinois. You know, Jumpman. But I think I’m going Justin Haley,” Smith added.
How has Kevin Harvick’s top pick SVG performed in his rookie Xfinity Series season?
Through 18 races, Shane van Gisbergen has put on an impressive show in his first full-time Xfinity Series season with Kaulig Racing.
Despite a topsy-turvy season, he has won two races, that too back-to-back victories at Portland International Raceway and Sonoma Raceway. Both the events were road courses.
SVG has led only 65 laps with an average finish of 15.7 this season. With two wins, three top-5s and four top-10 finishes, the New Zealand-born driver is 13th in the Xfinity Series points table with 406 points.
