Former Richard Childress Racing owner, Richard Childress, once opened a $12,000 bottle of wine for Kevin Harvick but was hesitant to do so because of a cork. He was recently featured on the Happy Hour podcast with former NASCAR driver Kevin Harvick and brushed up on their memories about the 1945 wine they drank together.
Harvick recalled the time and highlighted that he had won his first top-ten race, and Childress talked about the bottle of wine he had just bought. Suddenly, the RCR team owner said:
"You (Kevin Harvick) win the race this year; we're gonna drink this wine together."
The #29 driver was not confident if he would win the race, but he won the race in Atlanta and went back to Richard Childress' home to drink the wine. Childress wanted "something you could talk about in wine cellars," which carried the conversation. The 79-year-old drank the 1945 Château Mouton with Kevin Harvick, Kevin Hamlin, and his first wife.
Harvick asked Childress if he remembered the cork, and he replied, "It came apart." He narrated the rest of the story:
"He had to strain this; he had to strain this bottle of wine because the cork was from 1945, and the cork went on a bottle, and Richard did not really want to open this bottle of wine, but we sat there, and that was the first bottle of wine that I ever drank was that 1945 bottle that you had, that you had born." Kevin Harvick received a priceless retirement gift from Richard Childress
In another episode of Kevin Harvick's podcast Happy Hour, he reminisced about his first victory at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway with the Richard Childress Racing Team. Years later, Harvick revealed that Childress gifted him the #29 Chevy upon his retirement.
Harvick is one of the most successful drivers at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and has won the crown jewel three times in two different eras. His first victory was in 2003 during his third season with RCR behind the steering wheel of his iconic #29 Chevy.
The former NASCAR Cup Series Champion also highlighted that he cherishes the post-victory lap to this date and expressed this in his podcast.
"The coolest part about winning that first Brickyard in '03 was that there were 300,000 people around the racetrack, treating it like the Indy 500. You would ride in the back of the pace car or one of the show cars. We rode around, and all the Indy fans, steeped in tradition, hadn't left. It was one of the coolest things we were able to do because of all the people still there, just taking that moment in of winning the Brickyard 400," stated Kevin Harvick. [26:40]
Continuing further, he mentioned that Childress kept his car in the same condition. Harvick added that the car was kept with the same set of tires in which he did one of the best burnouts. Later, the RCR owner gave Harvick the car as a retirement present.
