Following the eventful end to the Brickyard 400 which Kyle Larson won, former NASCAR driver Kenny Wallace started an online poll. In that poll, Wallace asked a question with two options given for the fans to vote.
The question was which driver between Kyle Larson and his Hendrick Motorsports teammate Chase Elliott, was NASCAR's Golden Boy.
This resulted from a radio outburst of Ryan Blaney, who in the heat of the moment, exclaimed out his frustrations when Larson took the prime position to win the race after Brad Keselowski jumped into the pits for fuel.
"“There’s no way they should’ve let that go green. That’s ridiculous. They just GAVE it to him (Kyle Larson). It’s f*cking over, I’m on the top. I ain’t gonna win from the top. Gave it to f*cking golden boy. Son of a b*tch," Blaney said on his radio.
In the aftermath of the race, which Kyle Larson won, his fourth of the season, Kenny Wallace started the online poll. And many thousand votes later, he had a winner.
It was Kyle Larson who got 53% of the votes over 47% to Chase Elliott as he was crowned NASCAR's Golden Boy by the fans.
"After 7 thousand votes yall say that @chaseelliott and @KyleLarsonRacin are tied for the “Golden Boy” award 😂😂😂. However, Kyle just edging Chase out. Still pretty close 😆," Wallace wrote on his X handle.
The Hendrick Motorsports' winningest driver this season also had some banter of his own with the Golden Boy tag. Larson hilariously responded to a post about Blaney's radio message in which the Penske driver called him "f*cking golden boy."
"😎 thanks @NASCAR 🤝," Larson wrote.
Ryan Blaney doesn't mean to get personal with his radio outbursts
Earlier this season, after a Ryan Blaney outburst on the radio at Darlington, Denny Hamlin spoke about Blaney's two-sided persona.
"I've never seen anyone so quiet in person and so wild on the radio. Never. He is the epitome of when you strap on the helmet it cuts circulation off," Hamlin said.
However, Blaney attested that for him, bursting out his emotions on the radio is nothing more than "a blowoff valve".
"I try not to hold grudges. Those to me are like, get it out, then I'm over it in 10 seconds and now I can move on and focus instead of lingering on this thing that's bothering me," Blaney said.
The Team Penske driver remarked that he wishes he didn't have it, but it is simply a part of who he is. Blaney mentioned that it all comes from him feeling the need to get his emotions out, to reset, and to move on.
He claimed that everyone has fun with it and such outbursts never hinder him either as he doesn't carry that frustration with him.
