Kyle Larson has given details of how he got the better of Brad Sweet, his brother-in-law, in the Sprint Car Series race at Tulare Thunderbolt Raceway, California recently. Larson is exceeding all expectations this year, and his latest brilliance arrived in the Sprint Car Series.
This is the Hendrick Motorsports driver's sixth consecutive race win on a dirt track. Prior to this, he had won races at Federated Auto Parts I-55 Raceway, Southern Iowa Speedway, and Knoxville Raceway, all in the High Limit Racing.
However, Larson has two important reasons to celebrate this latest win. At Thunderbolt Raceway, he defeated Sweet, who is regarded as one of the best dirt racers in the country. On top of that, Larson and Sweet are brothers-in-law, which further spices up their dynamic.
"The track was slow enough. I found out like it wasn't gonna get too crazy," Larson said. "That [the race] was fun, the track was changing so much with all the caution like it was drying out so fast and the lines were changing quick," Larson said in an interview with FloRacing, the official streaming partner of High Limit Racing.
"I thought that the top was gonna be good and then James was just creeping the bottom so fast and I was nervous that he was gonna move up in time. But I had some things work out to get by him and then kind of just settled in and inched towards Brad, get to him, be patient and get by. Then the caution came out, thankfully right away, which kind of saved my race."
Kyle Larson has been the best driver in the NASCAR Cup Series so far this season, statistically. The #5 driver has taken four Cup Series victories in 22 races and is leading the regular season standings with 779 points.
He has nine top 5s (joint second best) and 12 top 10s (joint third best). Having already qualified for the playoffs, the 2021 Cup Series champion will look to push for his second title this season.
Kyle Larson believes he is a better all-round driver than F1 star Max Verstappen
While Kyle Larson is currently in fantastic form in NASCAR, he believes he is also better than reigning Formula 1 champion Max Verstappen. The NASCAR star, in a recent interview with FloRacing, shared this claim.
"I know in my mind I am better than him as an all-around driver," Larson said. "Maybe not in an open-wheel IndyCar or Formula 1 car, but that’s one discipline. I think I would beat him in everything else. You can quote that.”
While Kyle Larson might have four Cup Series wins and six Sprint Car Series wins, Max Verstappen is also enjoying a strong season. The Dutchman has won seven F1 races in 2024, and has 51 race wins in the last 80 races.
Kyle Larson is entitled to his opinion, but it is very difficult to differentiate between the two top drivers in their respective racing series because of the difference in car elements.
