Back in 2019, a kid reporter from NBC interviewed several NASCAR drivers about the sports' technology. While a few drivers managed to answer the questions, many were left baffled. Kyle Busch impressed the most among a series of Cup Series drivers as he spontaneously answered the kid reporter's question, while Kevin Harvick and Denny Hamlin stammered.
The NASCAR drivers from the 2019 Cup Series season attended an interview with a kid reporter from NBC. The drivers were asked about the technology involved in NASCAR as a sport and the cars. Motorsport on NBC uploaded the video from their official YouTube channel.
Besides the mentioned drivers, Bubba Wallace, Clint Bowyer, Ryan Blaney, Joey Logano, Brad Keselowski, and Austin Dillon took part in the interview session. The kid from NBC asked the drivers numerous questions, and one among them was,
"As you know, there's a new rules package in 2019. Can you explain how the tapered spacers restrict airflow?"
As the drivers heard the questions, Bower laughed and said,
"Excuse me?"
Wallace, on the other hand, heard it and appreciated the question.
Even Hamlin could not come up with a decent answer, as he said,
"It makes bigger holes smaller?"
However, when Busch's turn came, here's what he said,
"Air, can you see air?" asked Kyle Busch." Air, it's supposed to flow through your carburetor or your throttle body, on your race car, on your engine right?"
"When you put a tapered spacer in it and you reduce that airflow, you're restricting air, which air and gasoline makes, makes explosions, makes horsepower. The less air, the less power, the less bang."
In 2019, NASCAR introduced a rule change to lower the horsepower in the cars by making aero adjustments. The governing body has changed the existing tapered spacer (a thick piece of aluminum restricting airflow) to reduce the horsepower from 750 to 550.
Kyle Busch claimed the 2019 Cup Series Championship
The 2019 Cup Series season was an exciting year for Kyle Busch. It was the 71st season of NASCAR and the 48th modern-era Cup Series season. It was known as the Monster Energy Cup Series, where Busch emerged as the ultimate winner.
Busch, who was with Joe Gibbs Racing back then, claimed the title ahead of Martin Truex Jr., Kevin Harvick, and Denny Hamlin. Busch finished the season with 5040 points and was five, seven, and 13 points ahead of Truex Jr., Harvick, and Hamlin.
Interestingly, the driver born in Las Vegas also won that year's regular season championship. The 2019 title was the former JGR driver's second Cup Series title after he won the first in 2015.
