Martin Truex Jr. touched upon his feelings following the Phoenix Raceway race on Sunday. The Joe Gibbs Racing driver competed in the penultimate Cup Series race of his career at Phoenix, following which he shared that he was "not sad" as he looked forward to returning to a "different role."
Truex Jr. put an end to his illustrious Cup Series career with the final race of the 2024 Cup Series season. The JGR star is the 2017 Cup Series champion and also has two Xfinity titles under his belt. His stellar Cup Series career consists of 681 races in 21 years, 34 wins, 25 pole positions, and 289 Top 10s.
In June this year, Martin Truex Jr. announced that 2024 was going to be his final full-time Cup Series season. However, he decided to remain with Joe Gibbs Racing and spoke about racing in next year's Daytona 500 Cup Race.
"Still not sad man," Martin Truex Jr. told the media following the Phoenix race (as per Matt Weaver). Everybody wants me to be sad, but I'm happy, I'm celebrating. I've got a lot to be thankful for, to be proud of."
"So yeah, go enjoy some time off here and you know do the banquet and all that fun stuff, and yeah, it's going to be fun to come back and in a different role and you know come race for fun and you know, hopefully, be able to have fun, I don't know." (1:07-1:32)
Martin Truex Jr. wrapped up his 2024 season in 10th place with 2257 points. He finished ahead of Austin Cindric and registered five Top 5s, 11 Top 10s, and four pole positions.
Martin Truex Jr. failed to fulfill his final NASCAR wish
Prior to the final Cup Series race of 2024, Martin Truex Jr. wished to wrap up his career in style — by winning the Phoenix Raceway race. However, his wish did not get fulfilled as Joey Logano claimed all the limelight by winning the much-needed race.
"Thanks for sticking out all the way to the end here,” Truex said on the radio ahead of the race. “Hopefully we can go out on top. Appreciate all your hard work and dedication with all the things we’ve done over the years. It’s meant a lot."
The JGR driver finished his race in 17th place after starting on pole. He only led the race for 10 laps, and it was all over for him after he got caught in a shuffle of cautions and pit stops.
