Martin Truex Jr.’s foundation remembered Sherry Pollex through a social media post on her first death anniversary, which Gianna Tulio, Ryan Blaney's fiancee, shared on her Instagram story. Pollex was Truex Jr.'s ex-girlfriend and former Vice President of the MJT foundation.
Sherry Pollex and Martin Truex Jr. dated for about 18 years before calling it off last January 2023. She was initially diagnosed with advanced Stage 3 ovarian cancer in 2014 before passing in September last year.
In an Instagram post, the MJT Foundation acknowledged Pollex's bravery from her time battling cancer while advocating for women and children.
“One year ago, we lost a fearless leader and a fierce advocate for women and children everywhere. She was brave, she was strong, and she faced fear head on with grace and grit. She changed more lives than she probably ever realized, and we are so much better for knowing her,” the post reads.
“As we spend the day gearing up for her favorite event of the year, we feel her presence everywhere. We hope we make you proud, SP. We are all #SherryStrong 💪🏼 @sherrystrongoc we love you 🩵🦋”
The MJT Foundation was founded in 2007 by NASCAR Cup Series champion Martin Truex Jr. and Sherry Pollex. It aims to generate financial support for underfunded cancer initiatives specific to ovarian and childhood cancers.
Pollex was also a founder of the Catwalk for a Cause, a fashion event dedicated to fighting childhood cancer. Since its inception in 2010, the Catwalk has raised over $5 million.
The ex-couple received the National Motorsports Press Association’s Myers Brothers Award for their contributions to stock car racing in 2017. In 2022, Sherry Pollex was a finalist for the Comcast Community Champion of the Year Award.
Martin Truex Jr. set to retire after two decades in the stock car racing league
Earlier this year, Martin Truex Jr. announced that he'd retire at the end of the season. His NASCAR Cup Series career started a year after he and Sherry Pollex started dating in 2005.
The 44-year-old driver has 34 wins under his belt, including two at the Coca-Cola 600, the longest race on NASCAR’s schedule. His most successful season was in 2017 when he won the Cup Series championship after beating Kyle Busch, Kevin Harvick, and Brad Keselowski in the Championship 4 at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
Currently, Martin Truex Jr. is in a playoff run with Joe Gibbs Racing in the No. 19 Toyota Camry. However, the New Jersey native is having a rough start in the postseason.
The Toyota driver had a DNF in the playoff opener at Atlanta and finished P20 after starting from P2 at Watkins Glen. However, he won stage one on the road course race, earning 27 points for his efforts.
Martin Truex Jr. is heading to the final race at Bristol 15th in the playoff standings. He is -14 below the cutline along with Denny Hamlin, Brad Keselowski, and Harrison Burton.
The Bristol night race is happening on September 21. By the end of the race, four playoff drivers will be eliminated from contention.
