The 2017 NASCAR Cup Series champion Martin Truex Jr. is enjoying his personal passion and outdoor hobbies after retiring from full-time NASCAR racing. He wrapped up his full-time NASCAR Cup Series career with a 17th-placed finish in the season-finale race at Phoenix Raceway.
Ahead of the 2024 NASCAR awards ceremony, Truex Jr. revealed that he has been involved in hunting and fishing since Phoenix Championship weekend. He also killed his biggest buck of his life. As his full-time racing career ended, the 44-year-old Township, New Jersey, native is enjoying and exploring the new chapter of his life.
Speaking to NASCAR reporter Alan Cavanna about his post-retirement life, Martin Truex Jr. said:
“Since Phoenix, I’ve killed my biggest buck ever. And the tuna are going crazy. So I’ll be in the boat in a few days.”
Martin Truex Jr., in his final race, started on the pole and led nine laps before securing a 17th place finish. Despite not securing a win in his final full-time season, Truex reflected positively on his career, which includes the Cup Series championship in 2017, 34 career Cup wins, 147 top-five finishes and 291 top-10s in 693 career starts. He's grateful for the respect he earned and his achievements in his career.
Expressing his emotions on his retirement, Truex said (via RACER)
"Still not sad. Everybody wants me to be sad [and] I'm happy. I'm celebrating. I've got a lot to be thankful for, a lot to be proud of.”
Martin Truex Jr. plans to participate in select NASCAR races in 2025
The former Joe Gibbs Racing driver has expressed interest in competing in limited Xfinity Series races next season, indicating a desire to stay connected to the sport. Additionally, he has plans to run the season-opening Daytona 500.
Speaking to the media ahead of Friday’s NASCAR Awards Ceremony about his 2025 NASCAR racing schedule, Truex said:
"Racing-wise, I mean, I'm going to do the Daytona 500 and looking forward to running some [NASCAR] Xfinity Series cars a bit here and there, just to have fun and see how it goes. I really enjoy that style of car, you know, low downforce, and just the older cars that we raced. So, I look forward to doing a little bit of that again, but other than that, not sure. I have a lot of hobbies, and I need to catch up on those. I'm excited about that."
