Nascar insider Jeff Gluck has shared his take on Corey LaJoie's violent flip at the Michigan International Speedway. The Spire Motorsports driver was battling against Noah Gragson and on lap 135, the former got loose as his ride went airborne on the backstretch.
The FireKeepers Casino 400 was postponed as heavy downpours stopped the race after 50 laps of action on Sunday, August 18. Chase Elliott started first on Monday, followed by Kyle Busch in second. LaJoie originally started his run in 31st place, registered a P17 finish in Stage 1, and P24 in the second stage. However, while fighting for 16th place, misery knocked on the #7 Chevy driver's door.
The Spire Motorsports racer made contact with the Stewart-Haas Racing driver's left rear, immediately going airborne after a left inward spin. The 32-year-old rolled multiple times in his NextGen car before it reached a standstill on the infield grass.
Jeff Gluck mentioned gusts of wind on the two-mile track and how they might have played a part in wildly elevating the #7 Chevy. Such flips aren't common on tracks shorter than superspeedways where high-speed traps are less likely.
"The wind gusts were coming from that direction, so you know, it could be possible as simple as like, 'Hey, he [Corey LaJoie] had an extra 30 mph wind coming under his car, essentially when he turned' and maybe that's enough to flip it over," the insider said via Dirty Mo Media on X (0:24).
Corey LaJoie settled in 32nd place and marked his second DNF of the season.
"I don't like to get upside down" - Corey LaJoie on facing inversion at Michigan after Talladega's final lap wreck
During the final lap at the Talladega Superspeedway in April this year, Michael McDowell tried to prevent Brad Keselowski from taking the domination. But while blocking, the Front Row Motorsports driver got into Keselowski's #6 Ford's nose and spun into the wall.
The chain reaction collected several cars, including Corey LaJoie's, which did a full rotation. After the #7 Chevy's left side was on the ground, it stopped, flipped over, and landed back on the four wheels. Meanwhile, Tyler Reddick avoided the pileup to mark his maiden 2024 Cup Series win.
After Monday's race at Michigan, the Spire Motorsports driver said he wasn't pleased with another inverted incident on the track. He said (via Bob Pockrass on X).
"I don't know if it was all arms of an angel or what it was, but that thing was up quick. Looking at the flags, that was into a headwind too, so maybe that. The liftoff speed I think was like 210mph with these cars. I don't know, I don't like to get upside down, I've done it twice this year," LaJoie said.
Per the latest update, Corey LaJoie will not return to the 2025 Cup Series for Spire Motorsports.
