Joe Gibbs’ grandson and NASCAR driver Ty Gibbs uploaded a post on his Instagram from his childhood on December 29th. The Joe Gibbs Racing driver uploaded a picture from his biking days as he reflected on a time when his mom made the bike races possible.
Ty Gibbs shared a throwback picture where the 22-year-old is seen sitting on his bike. A red cart can be spotted beside Gibbs and his bike, which is loaded with biking gear and the supposed trophies won by him at that race weekend.
The JGR driver’s mother Heather Gibbs is standing beside Ty in the picture and is on the phone with someone. The caption to the uploaded picture read:
“#TB when I race bikes. Mom always made it happen, love ya!”
Ty Gibbs was no stranger to the world of motorsport but began his racing career on non-motorized two wheels. Joe Gibbs’ grandson made his BMX racing debut at the age of six. He won the North Carolina State Championship, Regional Championship, Red Line Championship and District Championship in the first three years of his biking career.
At the age of nine, he attained national number seven in ABA (American Bicycle Association) BMX competition. Gibbs earned the national No. 3 in USA Cycling mountain bicycle racing. Within five years of his BMX debut, at the age of eleven, Ty Gibbs had a go at karting.
The 22-year-old fell in love with motorsports, just like his father Coy Gibbs and grandfather Joe Gibbs. At the age of 15, he made his late model stock cars debut and went on to race in the ARCA Menards and NASCAR K&N Pro series in the late 2010s.
The Joe Gibbs Racing driver made his Xfinity debut for JGR in 2021 and won the championship the very next year in 2022. In 2023, Ty Gibbs was promoted to JGR’s NASCAR Cup Series team and was given the #54 Toyota.
“Stuff Changes”: Ty Gibbs reacts to Joe Gibbs Racing’s move of his crew chief Chris Gayle to Denny Hamlin
Joe Gibbs Racing announced that Denny Hamlin's crew chief Chris Gabehart has been promoted to the role of competition director. As a result, Ty Gibbs’ crew chief Chris Gayle was moved to the role left behind by Gabehart, i.e. Hamlin's crew chief. NASCAR reporter Bob Pockrass uploaded a video of Gibbs reacting to the change as he said:
“I think stuff changes. I think my grandfather won three Super Bowls with three different quarterbacks, so I think stuff changes, and it's healthy. I think that it will work its way when Gabehart is going to go do this deal, so I'm hopefully excited for the future, and hopefully we run really great next year in one of our races.”
Ty Gibbs hasn't been assigned a new crew chief yet, but JGR announced that the decision will be made before the 2025 season starts in the first week of February.
