Well, that sounds interesting! Kyle Petty is preparing his father Richard Petty’s iconic 1970 Plymouth Superbird to drive in the Goodwood Festival of Speed, a premier event in the global automotive calendar next week. It must be a significant moment for classic car enthusiasts and NASCAR fans.

The legendary 1970 Plymouth Superbird is one of the most iconic vehicles in American history, known for its distinctive aerodynamic design and powerful performance. It's often regarded as one of the most iconic muscle cars of its era.

In a YouTube video on Petty Family Racing’s channel, the $20 million-worth Kyle Petty (according to Celebrity Net Worth) sees taking his dad’s 1970 Superbird for a test drive to ensure that this classic beauty is fully ready for the Festival of Speed. In that video, Petty has expressed that the legendary 1970 Plymouth Superbird is his “favorite car in the whole world.”

Speaking about the car and the event, Petty said:

“Remember, this is 1970. I was 10 years old. This is my favorite car in the whole world, and I'm going to get a chance to drive it at Goodwood at the Festival of Speed, and I am so pumped up about it. I can't wait. So this was my first test drive. Next time you see me in this car, I'll have a helmet on and a uniform, and I'll be ready to run a few miles.”

Richard Petty, the greatest NASCAR driver of all time and NASCAR Hall of Famer, drove the #43 Plymouth Superbird in 1970, achieving 18 victories that year and cementing the car's legendary status.

The Festival of Speed will celebrate the 75th year of the Petty family's illustrious involvement in motorsport. The festival is set to begin from Thursday, July 11 to Sunday, July 14.

Kyle Petty shares a story of the 1970 Superbird with his dad

The 1987 Coca-Cola 600 winner recalled a memorable experience when he drove the 1970 Superbird with his father. During their drive, Richard noted the car's instability on the highway; however, it wasn't a concern since it's not designed for such use. The legendary car has been in the Petty Museum for the last three years.

Recalling his last memory with this car, Kyle Petty said in the Petty Family Racing’s YouTube video:

“It is a 1970 Superbird. It's been in the museum. The last time we had it out, I did dinner drive with my dad, and he actually let me drive this car. When we had it out that time, my dad didn't like the way it drove; he thought it wandered all over the highway. Not that this is a highway car, so it doesn't make any difference whether it wanders all over the highway or not, but Penny's Garage has gone through it.”

Kyle Petty was a third-generation NASCAR driver, as he followed the footsteps of his father Richard Petty and grandfather Lee Petty to pursue a career in NASCAR. He has had a good career in NASCAR Cup Series and is currently working as a racing commentator.
