The 33 races, including the seventh race of the playoffs, have already taken place in the 2022 NASCAR Cup Series season. Team Penske driver Joey Logano secured his spot for the Championship 4 of the 2022 playoffs after winning the South Point 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Sunday.
In a thrilling race, the 32-year-old used his fresh tires to go on a tear through the field to pass Ross Chastain with three laps to go and drove away his #22 Ford to cross the checkered flag in P1.
With Sunday’s victory, Logano became the first driver to lock his ticket for the Championship 4, gained 58 points, and secured the top spot after jumping one spot to take the lead in the playoff standings with 4084 points.
Logano’s win and results in the first race of Round of 8 have once again jumbled the playoff standings. Chase Elliott, who entered Sunday’s race ranked #1, has now fallen to third place in the playoff standings with 4062 points after finishing 21st at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
Chastain, who finished runner-up, moved from third to second place. He is followed by Chase Elliott and Denny Hamlin in the final fourth place to advance into the finale of the 2022 NASCAR Cup Series season.
