After heavy rain and thunderstorm affected the schedule for NASCAR All-Star weekend at North Wilkesboro Speedway, the latest weather reports have harbored positive news for fans.
The 2024 NASCAR All-Star Weekend at North Wilkesboro Speedway has been significantly disrupted by torrential rain and intermittent lightning, causing a shake-up in the event schedule. Saturday’s planned activities, including the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race and the Cup Series qualifying heats, were affected by the inclement weather.
The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race, initially set for Saturday, was halted after 81 of the scheduled 250 laps. This interruption occurred due to a brief shower and lightning, with a subsequent downpour around 3:30 p.m. ET that left the 0.625-mile track waterlogged. As a result, the race was postponed and is now scheduled to resume on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. ET.
The heavy rain and storms have created challenging conditions over the past 48 hours in North Wilkesboro, resulting in more than four inches of rainfall in Wilkes County, NC. The severe weather led to flooding at the track and in parking lots, transforming the raceway into a virtual swimming pool.
Despite these setbacks, there is a silver lining. According to BAM Weather, the forecast for Sunday looks significantly better, with rain chances moving south and west, promising a much drier day conducive to racing.
What are the latest updates on North Wilkesboro waterlogging ahead of NASCAR All-Star race?
The track, heavily waterlogged on Saturday, required extensive efforts to restore its condition. According to NASCAR reporter Bob Pockrass, full power was restored to the venue, and the inches of water that had accumulated on the pit road was successfully drained by 5:30 p.m. ET.
Due to the cancellation of both 60-lap qualifying heats for Sunday’s All-Star Race, the lineup will be determined by Saturday’s qualifying results as per the NASCAR Rule Book.
Consequently, Team Penske driver Joey Logano will start the NASCAR All-Star race from the pole position, with Brad Keselowski lining up beside him. Christopher Bell, whose No. 20 Joe Gibbs Racing team triumphed in the Pit Crew Challenge, will start in third place. Daniel Suárez and Chris Buescher complete the top five starters.
Saturday’s weather also led to the cancellation of the Craftsman Truck Series qualifying, necessitating the lineup to be set according to the NASCAR Rule Book. This placed series points leader Christian Eckes at the front for the green flag. Eckes showed a strong performance, leading the first 62 laps before Ty Majeski took over to win Stage 1.
