The NASCAR Cup series welcomed the 2022 season with a memorable pre-season race, the LA Clash, hosted at the historic LA Coliseum. After that, all roads led to the Iconic D-shaped 2.5-mile Daytona International Speedway to kick off the season.
Since its kick off on February 20th, 2022 NASCAR has already completed three races and crowned three winners. They began the season with the Daytona 500, where rookie driver, Austin Cindric, captured his first crown.
NASCAR then landed in Fontana, California, for the Wise Power 400 at the Auto Club Speedway. Defending champion Kyle Larson carried the day.
From Fontana, they headed to Las Vegas for the Pennzoil 400, at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, where Alex Bowman carried the checkered flag. Following the completion of the three races, NASCAR fans have generated a unique Cup Series Statistics.
On Twitter, one fan analyzed the statistics of the 2019 season, stating that:
"The driver who led the most laps in the first 3 Cup races this year did not win: Daytona 500 - @Keselowski (67 laps) Auto Club - @TylerReddick (90) Vegas - @RossChastain (83)Last happened in 2019. Kyle Busch broke the streak at Phoenix."
According to the statistics, of all three drivers who have won the past three races, none of them have led the most laps. The statistics also noted that all the drivers who led the most laps in the three races never won or finished as runners-up.
In the Daytona 500, No. 6 Brad Keselowski recorded 67 lead laps, more than any other driver on the tracks, but finished in the 9th place, with Austin Cindric taking the win.
In Fontana’s Auto Club Speedway, Tyler Reddick led 90 laps, but Kyle Larson clinched the win. In the final race, Ross Chastain registered a clean 83 laps but at the end of the day, Alex Bowman took the checkered flag.
Analytical performance of the 2006 NASCAR Cup Series
The statistics of the three race matches were compared with those of the 2006 season, where the drivers who won the first four races didn’t have most laps.
During the 2006 season, Jimmie Johnson won the Daytona 500 within only 24 laps. At the Auto Club Speedway, Matt Kenseth emerged as the winner with only 40 laps. On Twitter, one fan posted an analysis of the 2006 season stating that:
"The last time the winners of the first four #NASCAR Cup races in a season didn't lead the most laps was 2006. Daytona 500 - Jimmie Johnson (24 laps) Auto Club - Matt Kenseth (40) Las Vegas - Johnson (one) Atlanta - Kasey Kahne (85)"
Las Vegas was the most hilarious, as Jimmie Johnson took the checkered flag with only one lap. In Atlanta, Kasey Kahne tried and led 85 laps before stepping on the checkered flag.
This weekend, all the 36 Cup series drivers will line-up on the tracks of Phoenix Raceway for the Ruoff Mortgage 500, on Sunday, March 13th.
