Recent reports suggest NASCAR has agreed to air another documentary for the 2024 Playoffs. However, the rising tensions in the ongoing charter negotiations may cause some friction.
Amid this, several fans have expressed their concerns and criticized the Association for the delay in the charter agreement.
The current charter agreement between the teams and the organization will expire at the end of the 2024 season. Negotiations have been ongoing between both parties to finalize a mutually satisfactory agreement. However, reports indicate that the organization has resisted the teams' proposals.
Additionally, the Association's current proposal reportedly does not include permanent charters and allows the co-founding France family to acquire a charter themselves, raising concerns among the teams.
Reporter Adam Stern has shared on X that the Association reportedly struck a deal with Netflix to document the 2024 Playoffs and that teams are not willing to cooperate until a charter agreement is finalized.
Several fans have voiced their opinions on the subject, criticizing the Association for not working hand in hand with the teams to make sure a charter agreement is in place.
"NASCAR GET THE F*****G DEAL DONE ALREADY, DON'T SCREW THIS UP FOR GREED," one said.
"NASCAR really just needs to swallow their pride here. It’s only gonna hurt the sport if they don’t give in at least a little," another said.
"NASCAR thinks anybody can play the part. They think they’re the main attraction. That’s not the case. Teams and drivers deserve to be recognized and shown the respect they deserve," a third fan said.
However, a few fans criticized the teams for connecting the documentary with the charter negotiations.
"I really hope teams realize that these 2 things don’t need to be connected. Do the show, build the fan base. There’s no need to link that with charter negotiations," a fan said.
"Teams voluntarily stunting the growth of our sport is concerning," another said.
The Association struck a deal with streaming service Netflix last year to cover the 2023 Cup Series Playoffs and achieved notable success. However, as tensions rise amid charter negotiations, the possibility of documenting the 2024 Playoffs might be at risk.
Denny Hamlin points out a key issue amid charter negotiations with NASCAR - "Answer has been no"
Joe Gibbs Racing driver Denny Hamlin has voiced his opinion on the current charter negotiations. He co-owns 23XI Racing with NBA Hall of Famer, Michael Jordan.
23XI has been speculated to acquire another charter for the upcoming year. However, Hamlin has pointed out that teams are in a constant battle with the Association to attain sponsorships. He said (via the "Kenny Conversation" podcast):
"We have our own sponsors that NASCAR will send their own sponsorship proposal to, to try to get (the Association) to spend money with them, but we need (the Association) the most because of our business model. It costs us $18 million a year to put a car on the racetrack. We've asked NASCAR to just cover our cost, nothing more, just cover our cost to go put on this show for you (the fans), and the answer has been repeatedly no." [1:11:54]
Permanent charters provide NASCAR team owners with financial security, but if the new charter agreement excludes them, co-owners Hamlin and Jordan might reconsider their plans to acquire a third charter for the 2025 season.
