A NASCAR insider called for a study on the amount of Uncrustables consumed in the NASCAR garage. The plea follows a report by The Athletic stating NFL teams consume about 3,600 to 4,300 Uncrustables a week, with the sealed PB&J (peanut butter and jelly) sandwich dubbed the favorite.
Uncrustables are premade frozen sandwiches offered in various flavors such as peanut butter & grape, peanut butter & honey, and chocolate-flavored hazelnut, among others. As the name suggests, the crusts are removed, leaving only the soft part of the bread covering the filling.
In an X (formerly Twitter) post, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio host Davey Segal asked for a study to be done on the consumption of Uncrustables around the garage.
“Would like to see a study done on the Uncrustables consumed in the #NASCAR garage next plz,” he wrote.
The study on the NFL’s consumption of Uncrustables suggests that at least 80,000 frozen sandwiches are consumed annually. The team that consumes the most Uncrustables in a week is the Denver Broncos at 700, followed by the Seattle Seahawks and Jacksonville Jaguars at 320 and 315, respectively.
Notably, only 24 of the 32 teams provided The Athletic with data their average weekly Uncrustables consumption.
According to the report, the estimated numbers were garnered before practice, during training camp, and in the halftime locker room.
The consumption of Uncrustables among NFL teams is a practice that goes way back as far as the Super Bowl XLI in 2007. The Indianapolis Colts reportedly ate Uncrustables at halftime before beating the Chicago Bears 29-17.
Considering NASCAR runs fewer schedules than the NFL, the number could be less than the latter league’s estimated consumption of 80,000 Uncrustables annually. Moreover, the stock car racing league also has only about two or three drivers per team, while the NFL has 53 players on each team.
NASCAR drivers like Kyle Larson and Bubba Wallace shared their go-to pre-race meals
While a study on the consumption of Uncrustables around the NASCAR garage has yet to be conducted, the drivers previously shared their favorite meals before going out on the track.
Per Chat Us Up on Instagram before the 2024 Geico 500 from Talladega Superspeedway, most drivers said their usual pre-race meal comprised chicken and rice. One of them was Kyle Larson, albeit the 2021 Cup Series champion preferred having veggies on the side. Meanwhile, Bubba Wallace picked barbeque chicken.
Joey Logano shared that his pre-race meal would comprise a piece of salmon and some broccoli, though chicken could be an alternative. He noted drivers should play it safe, probably considering they run a race about three hours in a car.
“I usually eat a piece of salmon, with some broccoli… maybe some chicken instead of the salmon… just kind of depends on the day. You gotta go safe. Can’t get too crazy," Logano said.
Michael McDowell chose sweet potatoes because he was told they were ‘jet fuel.’ Some drivers like Danny Hamlin, Harrison Burton, and Chase Briscoe opted for pasta as it contains carbs, providing them energy for the race.
