Richard Petty, who is regarded as one of the greatest NASCAR drivers of all time, has spent over three decades competing in the NASCAR Cup Series. The former NASCAR driver has often been open about his passions outside of the racetrack, but he recently revealed what he enjoys doing in his downtime other than racing.
Richard Petty recently sat down with his former legendary crew chief, Dale Inman, to answer fan-submitted questions. One of the questions was about his interests other than racing. Petty shared his evolving sports preferences as he ages, mentioning his strong fondness for football—both college and professional—over other sports like baseball and basketball.
“You know, me, as I get older and stuff, I've always really liked football. I've always really liked football: college football, professional football. I've never been that big on baseball or basketball. I might like to watch the championship games, but during the season,” NASCAR legend Petty said.
Dale Inman had served as a crew chief of Richard Petty at Petty Enterprises for more than 30 years. The duo together has won 188 Cup races and seven championships. Inman and Petty are considered one of the most successful NASCAR driver-crew chief pairs in sports history.

Richard Petty, known as “The King,” further reflected on the natural shifts in priorities and interests as life progresses. He explained that when his racing career neared its end, his focus shifted toward nurturing his growing family, spanning from having children to becoming a great-grandfather.
“I guess you just kind of learn to live a different life as you go from one part of your life to another life. And to begin with, you had no kids, then all of a sudden you got kids, then you got grandkids, then you got great grandkids. The big deal there is I think as I get older, I get more family-oriented,” Petty added.
“To begin with, I didn't have time for the family because I was busy racing. And as my racing went downhill, the family grew. So my attention then went to, you know, how to keep the family together,” Petty continued.
