JR Motorsports is eyeing a potential charter deal if the opportunity arises. Recently in a conversation, Dale Earnhardt Jr. showed eagerness to buy a charter in NASCAR's top-tier division.
With the current charter negotiations buzzing in the NASCAR community, former NASCAR driver and co-owner of JRM Dale Jr. is eyeing to purchase a single charter in the Cup Series and has been vocal about it with his sister Kelly Earnhardt Miller, also a co-owner of JRM for several years. JR or Junior Motorsports currently competes in the Xfinity Series, CARS Tour, and iRacing Series.
The part-time Xfinity driver Dale Jr., in a recent discussion with SiriusXM NASCAR Radio, revealed his motives regarding the new charter deal as the current agreement would expire at the end of the 2024 season.
"I think the one thing that I will be paying the most attention to, is whether that NASCAR makes the charters permanent or not," Dale Jr said.
The 49-year-old North Carolina native elaborated on backup measures if such ambitions don't come into play.
"There's two ways for us to go at Junior Motorsports. Kelly and I could bring in some financial support to acquire charters and Junior Motorsports becomes a cup team. That's kind of been the idea in our mind for the last several years. If that's not in our future and if that's not something that me and Kelly both want, there is that opportunity, I think, for many, many years and many opportunities down the road to invest in a current team and invest in a single charter," Dale Jr. added.
The former Hendrick Motorsports driver believes that it would be more feasible for them to focus on a particular race car. Dale Jr. thinks that he would have a strong influence if JRM invests in a single charter as far as drivers and sponsors are concerned.
"We're not sitting here waiting for some dominoes to fall, but we always have our ear to the ground for what opportunity might be out there," added Dale Jr in the end.
JR Motorsports' co-owner regrets not buying Cup Series charters
Dale Earnhardt Jr. expressed his frustration on missing an opportunity to buy the charters when they were at a "cheaper" price.
Dale Jr. is a part-time Xfinity driver for JRM, a team he co-owns. In an episode of the Dale Jr Download podcast, Junior said:
"Look, man. I’m frustrated that I, I don’t know man, it’s tough. There’s a lot there. I wish I had been smart enough to buy a charter when they were cheaper. That’s the first thing I want to say because I know anything I say after this, people are gonna go, ‘Well you had a shot, you had the chance. You missed your chance bud, it’s over..’ and I did." Dale Jr. remains hopeful about the new charter agreement which is due at the end of the 2024 season, and is seemingly looking to get over his missed opportunity.
