Trackhouse Racing is likely to choose Shane van Gisbergen over Zane Smith as they might get a charter from Stewart-Haas Racing in 2025, according to NASCAR insider Bob Pockrass. They currently have Ross Chastain and Daniel Suarez, who are expected to carry on next season.
Trackhouse Racing is expected to be one of the teams that are expected to acquire a charter from Stewart-Haas Racing in the next season. The latter earlier revealed that they will cease their Cup Series operations at the end of 2024. According to Bob Pockrass, that extra seat is currently split between two drivers; Shane van Gisbergen and Zane Smith.
Smith is currently competing in his first full-time Cup Series season. He drives the #71 Chevrolet for Spire Motorsports, but his performance is a little questionable. He has remained out of the top 25 for most races this season, with his best finish in 13th place at the season-opener in Daytona. Other than that, he was within the top 20 on three different occasions; COTA, Gateway, and Sonoma.
Gisbergen, on the other hand, is only in his first Xfinity Series season, driving the #97 Chevy for Kaulig Racing. His record in the series is rather impressive so far with two wins and a total of four top-10 finishes.
Although Gisbergen has not gained a lot of experience in the Cup Series compared to Smith, he seems to be the choice for Trackhouse Racing. He also has plenty of racing experience in other series than NASCAR. Bob Pockrass wrote about the possibility of Trackhouse picking SVG in his Fox column.
"It still must decide whether it feels Shane van Gisbergen would be better off with another season in Xfinity. That would leave Zane Smith in that car, but the more likely scenario is van Gisbergen in a Cup car and Smith either looking for a ride while under contract or loaned to another team like he is this year with Spire," he wrote.
One of the team's two charters seems to have a good chance of getting into the playoffs. Daniel Suarez won the second race of the season at Atlanta. However, Ross Chastain might have a chance of adding himself to the 2024 winners' list as well, according to Kevin Harvick.
NASCAR veteran feels Trackhouse Racing could get their 2nd win of the season at Nashville
Kevin Harvick, while discussing the upcoming Cup Series race at Nashville, said that Ross Chastain could repeat his victorious triumph from last year on the track when he defeated Martin Truex Jr. for the win.
Speaking on Kevin Harvick's Happy Hour podcast, Harvick stated that the track is "different" and given Chastain's performance recently, he could be in contention to win the race.
"I'm going with last year's winner, Ross Chastain. I think it's hometown, lot of lot of people, just a it's kind of a different racetrack. I don't think they've run as good as they need to run, but he's just been knocking out decent finishes, and I think that this racetrack is unique enough to get somebody like Ross in contention to win," he said [at 50:25].
If Chastain manages to put the #1 Chevy to victory, it would mark Trackhouse Racing's second win in the 2024 season and make his contention for the Playoffs stronger. He is currently in ninth place in the standings with 510 points.
