Stewart-Haas Racing is set to close at the conclusion of the 2024 NASCAR season. Co-owners Tony Stewart and Gene Haas, in a recent announcement, declared to shut down their operations and put an end to the year-long rumor of selling their four-car Cup Series charter.
Stewart-Haas Racing started its operation in 2002 with Haas CNC Racing. Then, in 2009, Haas gave half of the organization to two-time Cup Series champion, Tony Stewart, to drive and operate the team. Since then, SHR has won two championships, one with Tony Stewart in 2011 and the other with Kevin Harvick in 2014. SHR was able to win the 69 Cup Series as a team, and their last win came thanks to Kevin Harvick, who retired from the sport in 2023.
In a recent announcement, the SHR co-owners said (via NASCAR on FOX):
"We have made the difficult decision to close Stewart-Haas Racing at the conclusion of the 2024 season. It is a decision that did not come easily, nor was it made quickly,"
"Racing is a labor-intensive, humbling sport. It requires unwavering commitment and vast resources, with a 365-day mindset to be better than everyone else. It's part of what makes success so rewarding. But the commitment needed to extract maximum performance while providing sustainability is incredibly demanding, and we've reached a point in our respective personal and business lives where it's time to pass the torch," they added.
"We have tremendous respect and appreciation for all of our employees, and we will work diligently to assist them during this transition to find new opportunities beyond the 2024 race season," they stated.
The SHR team currently fields four cars in the NASCAR Cup Series- Chase Briscoe, Noah Gragson, Josh Berry, and Ryan Preece. Following the conclusion of the 2024 season, the drivers' future is uncertain.
Tony Stewart ventures into the Drag Racing Series
Tony Stewart currently fields two entries in this year's Route 66 NHRA National with his team, Tony Stewart Racing. Between the two, Stewart is a rookie in the Top Fuel class, and Matt Hagan, a four-time Funny Car champion, is the other.
Stewart would be the only driver to attempt the oval track, dirt track, and dragstrip in Chicago.
