While the NASCAR Silly Season is in full swing, Richard Childress Racing is unlikely to make any major headlines this year. Recent reports indicate that the team is unlikely to expand to a three-car organization, whilst continuing with the current driver lineup.
Stewart Haas Racing's closure has not only put their four Cup drivers on the market but also four charters up for sale. With Gene Haas retaining one charter and Front Row Motorsports purchasing the second, the fate of the remaining two charters remains uncertain.
Richard Childress Racing was reported to be one of the few teams interested in buying it for the upcoming season. However, Fox Sports reporter Bob Pockrass recently suggested that the team owned by $250 million worth Richard Childress (via CelebrityNetWorth), is now less likely to expand into a three-car team despite early interest.
"The team [RCR] had flirted with adding a third full-time car for next year but that seems much less likely than in early June." an excerpt from Pockrass' recent report read.
Richard Childress Racing is having one of its worst campaigns this season. Two-time NASCAR Cup champion Kyle Busch's struggles in the #8 Chevy have intensified RCR's slump. Busch is currently outside the playoff picture and sits 17th in the regular season standings; his teammate Austin Dillon is even further back at 32nd.
Pockrass reports that both drivers will continue with the team next season, despite rumors suggesting that Dillon might step aside to a different role within his grandfather's organization.
As for the SHR's remaining charters, Trackhouse Racing and 23XI Racing have emerged as the leading candidates to expand into three-car organizations next season.
Dale Eanhardt Jr. highlights missed opportunity for Richard Childress Racing
Amidst the silly season movement, veteran NASCAR crew chief Rodney Childers was announced to join Spire Motorsports for 2025. Dale Earnhardt Jr. reflected on the news, reckoning it was a missed opportunity for Richard Childress Racing.
Dale Jr. pictured a formidable lineup at RCR, pairing Busch with Childers. He claimed Chiders could have also assumed Andy Petree's role as competition director, guiding the team out of their recent slump.
"I would say too, it's a missed opportunity or a loss for other teams, that may have been interested in Rodney. Imagine if he had went to RCR with Kyle Busch. Imagine that pairing, right? Rodney and Kyle together! Kyle wins races, I think gets back to victory lane." Dale Jr. said on Ask Jr. [at 8:38]
"Even Rodney could have taken Petree's spot over there as sort of the Technical Director, would have been a great hire."
Following Andy Petree's retirement, Richard Childress Racing announced Keith Rodden as the interim Competition Director.
