With the 2024 Cup Series in the final stage, NASCAR stars Joey Logano, William Byron, Ryan Blaney, and Tyler Reddick are all set for an exciting Championship 4 race at Phoenix Raceway. The sanctioning body gave the four finalists an intriguing challenge regarding the race track to relieve tension ahead of the all-important race.
Although constructed in 1964, Phoenix Raceway became a part of NASCAR's calendar in 1977. The mile-long low-banked tri-oval circuit gained popularity among NASCAR fans in 1988, after the first successful run of the Checker 500, the first-ever Cup Series race. Along with the oval, the raceway includes a 2.5-mile-long road course and a quarter-mile drag strip.
Phoenix currently hosts two NASCAR race weekends and has become the go-to venue for the Championship 4 race since 2020. After intense battles in the Playoff Round of 8, Logano, Reddick, Blaney, and Byron qualified for the season finale.
Recenty, NASCAR gave an intriguing challenge regarding Phoenix Raceway to the four title contenders. All four were asked the same question:
"How many NASCAR cars long is the championship track?"
While none were able to correctly guess the right answer, their attempt to reach the conclusion was quite hilarious. A short video clip of Logano, Reddick, Blaney, and Byron attempting the challenge at the raceway was shared by NASCAR on its official Instagram page.
Here's a look at the reel, captioned:
"Just when you thought the #Championship4 knew everything about @phoenixraceway. 😏"
As for the final Cup Series race at Phoenix on November 10th, It is difficult to predict the result as all drivers will be gunning for the ultimate glory.
“It’s going to be a tough battle,” - Hendrick Motorsports vice chairman Jeff Gordon on winning the challenging Championship 4 race at Phoenix Raceway
Although Hendrick Motorsports had three racers in Round of 8, only William Byron was able to reach the finale at Phoenix. Ahead of the all-out four-way battle, HMS vice chairman Jeff Gordon spoke about the challenges in winning the Championship 4 race.
"It’s going to be a tough battle. You’ve got three other teams and drivers that are rock-solid. They all have their strengths, and they all can run good at Phoenix, so we’re going to have to step up, no doubt. It would be huge. But Rick (Hendrick) and I talked about this last week before Martinsville about how excited we are of what we have accomplished this year," Gordon said.
"I mean 11 wins, all four cars in the playoffs, all four cars have won. We’ve won big races, the Brickyard, Daytona. So, it’s been a great year, and it’s going to be a year that we celebrate because of what we’ve accomplished over 40 years but especially what we’re doing in this 40th year. Of course, to take it to the next level and make it a year we’ll never forget, a championship, yeah, would certainly be the icing on the cake,” he added.
As of now, Team Penske holds the edge over HMS and 23XI Racing, with the former having two drivers (Joey Logano and Ryan Blaney) as opposed to one each (William Byron for HMS and Tyler Reddick for 23XI Racing) for the other two teams.
