As NASCAR takes a two-week break from its regular season schedule, drivers Chase Elliott and Denny Hamlin have shed light on their favorite Olympic Sport.
The break comes as a result of NBC Sports providing coverage for the Olympics. It has also allowed the drivers to take some well-deserved rest from the high-octane racing schedule. It also provides the teams and drivers in the race to make it to the playoffs to prep for the remaining four races of the regular season.
Cup Series drivers Denny Hamlin and Chase Elliott have already qualified for the playoffs. In collaboration with Coca-Cola Racing, multiple drivers were asked to share their favorite sport to watch during the Olympics, to which Hamlin responded:
"Favorite summer Olympic Sports competition would probably be the 100m dash."
HMS driver Chase Elliott went for a rather contrasting pick.
"I enjoy watching a lot of sports, it's kind of hard to pick one. Probably will enjoy watching Golf."
Team Penske driver Joey Logano shares a similar passion for track and field sports as Denny Hamlin. He said:
"I like a lot of track and field stuff. Probably just the running races are my favorite ones to watch. Probably the shorter ones are better, but I kind of like watching the long ones, the relay races are pretty cool to watch."
Daniel Suarez spoke about his passion for track and field, reminiscing about his running days and expressing his admiration for the dedication of Olympic athletes. Meanwhile, RCR driver Austin Dillon revealed his enthusiasm for swimming, particularly enjoying the team relay events.
The NASCAR Cup Series returns on August 11th with the Cook Out 400, marking the first of four remaining regular season races. Drivers and teams will head to Richmond, Virginia for 400 laps of intense competition. With the last playoff spots still up for grabs, drivers will be aiming to deliver top performances to secure a playoff position.
NASCAR insider reveals reason behind delay in 2025 schedule
NASCAR's 2025 schedule was initially set to be released in May. However, a lot of delays have been witnessed since then.
This is not the first time a schedule announcement has been delayed, rather it has been a recurring occurance since 2020. The organization has released schedules as late as October, majorly to facilitate some exciting changes like the return of the Brickyard 400, and the inaugural Cup Series race at Iowa this season.
In response to a fan's question, Fox Sports journalist Bob Pockrass revealed the reasons behind the delay in the release of the 2025 schedule. He wrote on X (formerly Twitter):
"I'm with you ... But NASCAR doesn't like to release schedule b/c f one track/date falls through, it can impact many others. For instance, last year Phoenix announced its championship weekend and then months later, said it would be a week later than originally announced."
There has been speculation about NASCAR looking into scheduling international races. However, the work going into making it a possibility is reportedly one of the major reasons behind the delay.
