Legacy Motor Club co-owner Jimmie Johnson has outlined his teammate Erik Jones' post-crash treatment in Talladega after the latter got into a horrific wreck with 23XI Racing driver Bubba Wallace.
The tenth Cup Series race on the 2024 calendar witnessed the #43 LMC driver getting engulfed in a massive wreck, following which he was rushed to the infield care center and later transported to a local hospital. According to the latest update, Erik Jones is still recovering from his back injury and will miss the Dover race.
Ahead of the LMC's Monster Mile run, the 7x Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson shed light on Jones' post-crash treatment in Talladega (via Bob Pockrass on X):
"I have not seen the car and certainly not concerned with Erik's trip back to the care center. In my experience with crashes and injuries, it takes a little time for stuff to sink in. The care center reacted perfectly and there's really not much that could've been handled differently in that moment," said Jimmie Johnson.
The 2.66-mile high-banking oval witnessed seven Toyota Camrys run in a single file, battling for contention. However, on Lap 157, a slight nudge from John Hunter Nemechek into Bubba Wallace's rear birthed a domino effect, spiraling Wallace, Erik Jones, and Denny Hamlin's ride.
Erik Jones to sit out in Dover as Corey Heim will kick off his first Cup Series run for Jimmie Johnson's co-owned team
The persistent back injury from the Talladega crash will see Erik Jones miss the 11th Cup Series run. Five laps before the brutal final stage crash robbed the 27-year-old of a potentially promising outcome, the seven Toyotas, in a bid to gain an advantage over the rival manufacturers, pitted for fuel.
The Camrys were fielded by Tyler Reddick, Martin Truex Jr., Erik Jones, Bubba Wallace, John Hunter Nemechek, Denny Hamlin, and Ty Gibbs entered the pits, where Reddick exited first.
Shortly after pitting, the horrific wreck, involving the same Toyotas occurred and resulted in a back injury for the #43 driver, following which he was taken to the infield care center where he got the required immediate attention. However, what Jones thought to be a muscle strain turned out to be a much bigger problem, and subsequently, he was sent to the hospital and will miss the Wurth 400 race in Dover.
Nevertheless, the injured driver will assist his teammate Corey Heim in marking his debut Cup Series run, who will run alongside Jimmie Johnson as he gears up for his third race this season. Shedding light on his condition, Erik Jones opened up in a press conference, saying (via Kelly Crandal on X):
"I feel pretty good...My injury, fortunately, is on the mild side."
