Richard Petty’s grandkids spill the “scary” part about their grandfather’s test as one hilariously digs at the legend’s ‘solid’ advice

Richard Petty's grandchildren have shared the "scary" part about getting their driver's license in the Petty household. They said the stock car racing legend would get in the vehicle with them to test their driving skills.

In this episode of the Petty Family Racing channel on YouTube, the podcast was hosted by Austin and Montgomery, children of Kyle Petty. They were also joined by Hannah and Maggie, children of Sharon Farlow.

When Maggie opened up about Richard Petty's driving test upon getting their driver's license, she recalled how scary it was. She shared:

"Every time we got our driver's license [...] he had to get us in the car. We have to pass the Richard Petty driving test. That was scary." [1:04]

She added that it was more nerve-wracking having her grandfather in the car than a driving instructor.

Her sister Hannah chimed in and said the 200-time NASCAR race winner wore a helmet during her driving test with him. She continued by saying:

"He took me somewhere way out here and then said, 'Get back to the house,' and I said, 'I don't know how to get back.' And he said, 'Too bad, you got to figure out. You should have been paying attention.'"

Maggie then told on the podcast the advice Richard Petty gave to her.

"He told me not to ever look behind me... don't worry about people riding..."

Austin poked fun at Maggie and replied, "That's solid advice."

This conversation was part of the second installment of the 'Growing Up Petty' series. The Petty grandchildren talked about different topics including their speeding moments, with Montgomery admitting to getting 22 speeding tickets.

Richard Petty's daughter recalls losing him in an airport

Last September, Richard Petty and his children sat down at a roundtable to share stories about each other. Sharon, the mother of Hannah and Maggie, told the story of how she lost his father in an airport after landing.

At the time, the NASCAR Hall of Famer was sitting in first class, while Sharon and her husband were in the backseat of the plane. She told his father to wait for them before getting off.

“Don’t wander off. Wait for us to get off the plane,” Sharon said. [9:54]

However, as soon as she got to the first-class cabin, he was already gone.

Sharon looked around the airport for a man wearing a cowboy hat before deciding to wait in the baggage claim area.

“So I call the guy and I say, ‘Do you have my dad with you?’ And he says, ‘I’ve not seen your dad.’ And I said, ‘He is missing, we can’t find him,'" Sharon shared. [10:54]

Before getting a chance to page Richard Petty, Sharon saw his father coming down the escalator.

“He got down and he said, ’Y’all walked right by me,’” Sharon shared. “He said, 'I had a whole group around me when I got off the plane and y’all walked right by me.’” [11:50]

Richard Petty said:

“Didn’t recognize me.”

When they got to the hotel, Sharon reminded her father to wait for her before leaving his seat.
