The recently wrapped up Goodyear 400 at the Darlington Raceway witnessed Hendrick Motorsports driver Kyle Larson succumbing to a flat tire which ended his throwback weekend on a disappointing note.
During the Lap 254 misfortune, Larson received constant inputs from crew chief Cliff Daniels when the former spun out from Turn 4. Witnessing the barrage of echoing "Four Four Four Four..." input by the crew chief, Ryan Blaney's tire changer Ryan Flores took a jibe at Daniels citing it as his "worst nightmare."
The HMS driver ran in third place during the final stage of the 293-lap run but hit the Turn 2 wall and as a result, came down the pit road to adorn a fresh set of rubber. However, with nearly 20 laps under his belt with fresh tires, Larson fell victim to the massive tire degradation and lost control of his #5 Chevy.
Momentarily before the Lap 254 proved to be the final one for his weekend, Kyle Larson was seemingly frustrated as something was not right with his radio. He told his crew (via NASCAR on X):
"I don't know if you guys can hear me, but I'm gonna have to unplug my radio. It's f**ked up."
But it was Cliff Daniel's influx of input that caught Ryan Flores' attention and he opined on the same during the Stacking Pennies podcast, saying:
"This is legitimately my worst nightmare, hearing Cliff on replay. I'd much rather wreck than listen to that the rest of the race."
Show host Corey LaJoie used the moment to poke fun at Kyle Larson's situation and added:
"I've had it, I can't stand it anymore."
Kyle Larson outlines that "not even trying" robbed him of a potentially promising outcome at Darlington
The 123rd Cup Series race at the too-tough-to-tame track witnessed Brad Keselowski seal his maiden win this season to end his unwanted feat of the 110-race winless streak. Moreover, with his triumph, he snapped Ford's 33-race winless feat.
However, while Kyle Larson eyed his third win, the 1.33-mile asphalt had something else in the bag. With just 41 laps until the checkered flag dropped, the HMS driver earned the infamous 'Darlington Stripes,' courtesy of a defensive move against Carson Hocevar which sent the former's #5 Chevy grazing the outside wall in the opposite direction of the pack.
Larson's worst finish so far was at his Cup Series run in Atlanta Motor Speedway, where he finished 32nd after falling victim to the Lap 240 crash. However, multiple factors like eaten-up tires, charging Hocevar, and Larson swinging back in the inside line contributed to his premature exit, and the #5 Chevy was placed at the season-worst P34.
Post his dismal run, the Californian blamed himself for the poor performance and said (via FOX: NASCAR on X):
"I hate that my mistake, not even trying hard at all, cost us a race. A little frustrated with myself right now. Felt like I was running a good race to that point [Lap 254] and just one mistake took us out of it." (0.46)
With two wins, six top-5s, six top-10s, and 486 points, Kyle Larson leads the rankings, followed by Martin Truex Jr., who is 30 points shy.
