Defending NASCAR Cup Series champion Ryan Blaney was involved in a multi-car collision during the Goodyear 400 race at Darlington Raceway. The impact of the collision ended Blaney's race.

After starting the race in 17 position, Blaney was gunning for a top 5 finish. During lap 129, Blaney’s #12 Ford took the outside line on turn 2 to pass the #19 Toyota of Martin Truex Jr for fourth position. However, while he was making the move, the #24 Chevrolet, driven by William Byron was making a move on the inside.

Sensing a three-wide situation, Truex Jr tried to back off, to avoid getting squeezed. However, his late move to avoid a collision resulted in a multi-car tussle. Truex Jr was tagged by Byron, who in turn tagged Blaney, sending him into the wall. The defending champion was the first to retire from the race with a broken rear tow link.

This happened to be the second DNF of the season so far for Blaney, after his retirement in the Daytona 500 race at Daytona International Speedway on February 18th.

A frustrated Blaney said on his team radio:

"I'm gonna go kill both those mother f***ers is what I'm gonna do."

After being released from the infield care center, Blaney spoke about the incident with Jamie Little on FOX: NASCAR, explaining his angry outburst on the radio. He said:

"I Kind of have every right to be mad and he (Byron) gets away scot-free." [0:30]

During an interview regarding the use of a new option tire in the All-Star Race at North Wilkesboro Speedway, a journalist asked Ryan Blaney:

"After what happened between you two at Darlington, any conversation with William (Byron) on what happened?" [6:04 onwards]

To this, Blaney replied:

" Yeah we talked, you know." [6:10]

William Byron shared his perspective about the incident after the race

Hendrick Motorsports driver William Byron shared his side of the story regarding the incident with Ryan Blaney and Martin Truex Jr with Bob Pockrass on X.

"I felt like I was ahead of them and the exit, it's really narrow right there, I hate if I did come up a little bit but I was surprised I was even in that spot."

Byron added:

"I felt like I would never get to the bottom of three-wide... I don't wanna crash especially that early in the race, so I didn't really expect that to happen but I probably could've given a little more room."

After finishing the Goodyear 400 race in sixth position, Byron is currently placed fifth in the Cup Series drivers standing with 400 points. Meanwhile, Blaney is eighth with 371 points, trailing Byron by 29 points in the championship.
