Kyle Larson, one of the most successful drivers in NASCAR today, recently reflected on his performance as the 2024 season has progressed. He has experienced a noticeable dip in form after an impressive start to the season.
Larson is currently the No. 5 Chevrolet driver for Hendrick Motorsports and has struggled to turn leads into wins. The 32-year-old has only won three out of 11 races where he has led for over 200 laps.
In a recent media interaction, Larson spoke about his performance in the regular season.
"Overall, I think our regular season for the next-gen era probably was as good as it's been. I crashed a little bit more than I wanted to the second half of the regular season, so that was a bummer and missed out on a lot of opportunity because of that with fast race cars," Larson said.
Larson described the first half of the season as great and added that the second half was typical of his past inconsistencies. Larson’s recent performance was also affected by his fourth-place finish at the Southern 500. After leading for 263 laps, he lost the win to Chase Briscoe.
"First half went great, second half went typical Kyle Larson,” he added.
Overall, 20 drivers have led over 200 laps in ten or more races in NASCAR. Kyle Larson has been the least successful at turning these leads into wins. Ned Jarrett leads this group by winning 11 of the 12 races. Larson, on the other hand, has only won three out of 11 such races.
"Everybody in the playoffs controls their own destiny" - Kyle Larson on success In NASCAR
Kyle Larson also talked about how drivers can influence their own success in the NASCAR playoffs. He believes that every driver has the chance to shape their outcomes by performing well and avoiding mistakes.
Commenting on whether he can control his own fate since he has the most playoff points, Larson said the following:
"Honestly, I think everybody in the playoffs controls their own destiny. I think if you can go out there and your team as a whole can execute well, do a good job from start to finish, not make many mistakes, I think you can control your own destiny. Sure, with us having the amount of points that we do, great, but everybody I think controls their own destiny."
In addition to the NASCAR Cup and Xfinity Series, Larson is active in the IndyCar Series. He has also been highly successful in dirt track racing.
