Christopher Bell dropped a hint about returning to the track as Joe Gibbs Racing lifted dirt racing restrictions for their drivers. This decision came across as the team added Chase Briscoe to their lineup for the 2025 season.
Joe Gibbs Racing believed in keeping their drivers focused exclusively on NASCAR. Hence, they were restricted from taking part in other series, especially dirt racing. However, all of their drivers (except for Denny Hamlin) expressed their desire to take part in dirt racing. Moreover, JGR flipped their decision as Chase Briscoe, who started his career by racing in the dirt, joined the team.
Following the confirmation, Christopher Bell, driver of the #20 Toyota shared an interesting message on social media, suggesting his intent to get back to dirt racing.
"See you guys at a dirt track soon 😎"
Discussing the change of rules, team owner Joe Gibbs mentioned that he had always preferred his drivers' focus sticking to NASCAR. However, the growing interest in the team made him turn the decision.
"Always preferred (drivers’) focus remain on racing in NASCAR but felt it was fair to come up with a process to consider those opportunities," Joe Gibbs told The Athletic. "We sort of talked things over to come up with a process by which they can request to run certain races. If they get approval from everyone they need on our competition side, then they are free to run the race. That includes dirt, but also potentially other forms of racing."
As Martin Truex Jr. retires from full-time racing, JGR will see a change in their driver lineup. While Bell, Hamlin, and Gibbs will continue to race, Chase Briscoe will join them in the action.
Christopher Bell "super shocked" with JGR's decision to allow drivers to race in the dirt
Bell participated in dirt racing during the early stages of his career, famously winning 26 dirt races in 2014. This was a major part of his racing portfolio as his success in the early stages helped him climb his way to the Cup Series.
Reacting to the team overturning the decision, Christopher Bell revealed that he was shocked but felt that it was positive as most of the team is now in unison for the decision.
"I was definitely caught off guard by the change of policy," Christopher Bell said. "I was super shocked, but with Chase coming on board and Ty growing an interest in dirt racing, it's nice we have the majority of our team aligned with it now."
Chase Briscoe's move from Stewart-Haas Racing has been understood to be a major influence in Joe Gibbs Racing overturning their decision. The 29-year-old has also gained enough experience racing in the dirt. He is set to replace a departing Martin Truex Jr.
