Stewart-Haas Racing team is looking to go out with a bang by giving Chase Briscoe a strong playoff run. The Kannapolis-based outfit is replacing the No. 14 team's over-the-wall crew with the guys from the No. 4 team of Josh Berry.
Briscoe is an American professional driver piloting the No. 14 Ford Mustang Dark Horse for the outgoing Stewart-Haas Racing team. SHR will be rebranded as Haas Factory Team and compete in the NASCAR Cup Series with one charter only from four this season.
With a change in pit crews, Chase Briscoe will run with five different over-the-wall crew members from Josh Berry’s camp. An over-the-wall crew consists of two tire changers, a tire carrier, a jackman, and a gasman.
The team update was reported by NASCAR veteran reporter Bob Pockrass via X (formerly Twitter).
This decision could’ve been influenced by the poor final pit stop at Bristol Motor Speedway. Briscoe was running in 3rd when the caution was thrown after Corey LaJoie made contact with Josh Berry. The No. 14 car had a poor pit stop due to a slow right-front tire change then rejoined the grid in P13.
The 29-year-old Indiana native finished in 8th and scored 36 points at the Bass Pro Shops Night Race. While the SHR driver had a DNF at Atlanta, he secured P6 at Watkins Glen in front of the other 15 playoff drivers. His performance rewarded him with a spot in the Round of 12.
During a post-race interview with journalist Matt Weaver on X, Chase Briscoe said that SHR is a legitimate championship contender.
“Winning the way we did and just the competitive side of how good we have been the last four weeks doesn't surprise me at all. I feel like we're, nobody believes me, but I feel like we're legitimate championship contenders,” Briscoe stated. [0:21]
Chase Briscoe will continue his championship run in the first race of the Round of 12 at Kansas Speedway scheduled on September 29.
Chase Briscoe is set to join Joe Gibbs Racing next season
Earlier this year, Chase Briscoe announced that he has signed with Joe Gibbs Racing for next season following the discontinuation of the Stewart-Haas Racing team. The Haas Factory Team will field Cole Custer as its sole Cup driver next year.
Briscoe will take over the No. 19 Toyota Camry of Martin Truex Jr., who will retire at the end of the season.
Before the Bristol stop, Briscoe made it known that his focus is on winning, even if it came down to taking his future No. 19 JGR team out of the playoff contention.
“My job is to drive the #14 for Stewart Haas Racing and you know that at the end of the day, that's all I'm really worried about right now. I'm not worried about the #19 team or Joe Gibbs Racing or anything like that. If it ends up knocking the #19 out, I apologize to those guys, but yeah I'm doing what's best for me and my team right now," Briscoe said. [0:25]
Chase Briscoe is currently 12th in the playoff standings and -7 to the cut-line. However, the gap to the cut-line is marginal. Joey Logano is 8th and +4 above the cut-line while Austin Cindric is 9th and -4 below it.
