The two-time Cup Series champion Joey Logano is set to compete for his third title during the 2024 Championship 4 race at Phoenix Raceway. In an interview with NASCAR journalist Bob Pockrass, the Roger Penske star driver spoke about his feelings on the championships that have slipped away in the past.
Logano had a rough start to the 2024 season. With two wins at Nashville and Atlanta in the regular season, he secured his berth for the playoffs relatively early this year. However, with a few missed opportunities, the 34-year-old driver exited at the end of the Round of 12 elimination, only to get a second chance due to Alex Bowman's disqualification.
Making the most of the opportunity, Logano won the first Round of 8 race at Las Vegas, thereby becoming the first racer to secure a berth for the grand finale at Phoenix. In an interview with NASCAR journalist Pockrass, Logano described his feelings on the previous battles where his title hopes had slipped away.
"Both. Both go through my mind constantly. They both do. There's the ones, some of them just sting. They sting forever, because I look at it and you go, 'Gosh, you’re a two-time champion, that’s great.' Every time someone says that I go, 'Should have four,'" Joey Logano said (0:07 onward).
"We were right there. I'm like, 'Should I have four? One little thing changes, should be four of them.' And I'm sure there's so many other drivers that can say the same thing, right? Like, shoulda, coulda, wouldas. But that's just what goes through my mind every time I hear it," he added (0:30 onward).
"It’s the biggest race you’ll ever be a part of" - Team Penske's Joey Logano claimed he is focused on the Cup Series Championship race
With his place secured in the grand finale, Joey Logano is completely focused on the NASCAR Cup Series Championship race at Phoenix Raceway. He expressed his opinion during a pre-race media interaction during the Homestead-Miami weekend.
"I always feel like we can win the race no matter what, and we figured out a way last week even when we weren’t the fastest car — we were the best team that figured out how to win that race. That’s where I feel like we have such an advantage over the other teams," Joey Logano said.
“I laugh all the time because so many drivers in all three series, a lot of their answers are, ‘We just treat it as another race, it’s just another race,’ B.S it’s not another race, it’s not even close. It’s the championship. It’s the biggest race you’ll ever be a part of, " he added.
Despite a score of -33 points, Logano's win at Las Vegas has propelled the Middletown-born racer to second place in the playoffs standings, behind the current leader Tyler Reddick.
