NASCAR driver Zane Smith's wife, McCall Smith, criticized NASCAR's decision to throw a late caution flag at the Brickyard 400. This was the first Cup race at the Indianapolis Oval, following three years at the road course.
Zane Smith started the Brickyard 400 in P27, and as the race progressed, he navigated through the field and landed up in P16, right before double overtime. Ryan Preece's #41 spun off just as overtime started, sending him into the wall. Preece tried to roll back on the track but came to a halt, with half his car on the bottom of the track.
NASCAR decided to let the race run, but as soon as Kyle Larson crossed the white flag, a caution was called, marking Brickyard 400's finish under the yellow flag. Smith's wife, McCall Smith, was not pleased with the decision, as it might have disrupted her husband's chances of securing a better finish than his eventual P17.
"That is such bullsh*t nascar...," she wrote on X.
McCall Smith then explained her criticism of NASCAR's decision.
"Car was sitting there for a full lap but wait and throw the caution once the 5 takes the white lol… joke"
Zane Smith pilots the #71 Chevy Camaro ZL1 for Spire Motorsports. The 25-year-old has 13 wins in the Truck and Xfinity Series and previously raced in the Cup Series for RFK Racing, FRM, and RWR. Smith's first Cup race was the 2022 Enjoy Illinois 300, where he finished P17 after starting P32 as a replacement for Chris Buescher, who had tested positive for COVID-19.
Smith currently sits at P33 in the driver standings with 248 points. He has secured one top-five finish in 22 race starts, achieved in Nashville. The American has only led 3 laps throughout the season and holds a 25.955 average finish.
"He Fought like hell" - McCall Smith comments on Zane Smith's P2 finish at Nashville
Zane Smith secured a P2 finish at the Ally 400 in Nashville last month. The race witnessed five overtime restarts, multiple wrecks, and cars running low on fuel. Smith, whose best finish before Nashville was a P13 in Daytona, made the most of the chaos that emerged in the race.
Elated, Smith's wife celebrated her husband's achievement via a post on X. She wrote:
".068 from a Cup series win. All you can ask for is a shot at it and he fought like hell for it! So proud of you Zane! The definition of never give up."
Zane Smith and McCall Smith tied the knot earlier this year, in January. McCall has been a constant source of support, regularly attending Zane's races.
