Two-time Cup Series race winner Bubba Wallace gave his thoughts on NASCAR changing the damaged vehicle policy rules ahead of this Sunday's race at the Charlotte Roval. The driver of the #23 23XI Racing Toyota believes it's meaningless as the sport will change the rules again in the future.
The Alabama native gave a blunt response in an interview with racing insider Peter Stratta. In a video posted to his personal X account, Stratta asked the 31-year-old if he was clear on the new DVP rules. The seven-year veteran driver responded by saying:
"That bull**** will change again, so who knows? No."
Previously, the DVP rule stated if a damaged car needed to be towed back to pit road for any circumstance because it can't make it their under its own power, it would result in an automatic DNF. The rule sparked controversy following Josh Berry's lap-1 DNF at Kansas two weeks ago. The driver of the #4 Stewart-Haas Racing Ford appeared to have little damage, but because he couldn't make it back to the pits, he was automatically out of the race.
However, the rule was muddled after last week's 28-car wreck at Talladega when Chase Briscoe and Chase Elliott had their respective cars towed back and were allowed repairs. Ahead of this Sunday's Bank of America ROVAL 400, NASCAR has clarified that if a car has flattened tires but looks to be able to continue racing, it is allowed to be towed back for repairs.
The tweak to the DVP rule has made for negative responses, including Denny Hamlin, co-owner of Wallace's #23 machine. When asked if it he thought it was fair or not that NASCAR is making changes to a rule in the middle of the playoffs, Wallace responded by saying:
"It don't matter what's right or wrong, or fair or not fair. They'll do whatever they want," Bubba Wallace said.
Bubba Wallace's performance in 2024 up to this point
After making the 16-driver playoff field for the first time in his career last year, Bubba Wallace failed to repeat that feat in 2024 as he was the second driver below the cut-line for this year's playoffs.
In 31 starts this season, Wallace has posted six top-fives, a pole, and a stage win, while currently sitting 19th in the standings. His best finish of the season came three weeks ago in a third-place outing at Bristol.
Bubba Wallace is riding a two-year winless streak as his last victory came at Kansas in October 2022. Meanwhile, Wallace's teammate and team co-owner, Tyler Reddick and Denny Hamlin, are both currently above the cut-line to advance to the Round of 8 with one race remaining in the Round of 12.
