“That’s absolutely insane”: Fans react to Joey Logano’s seemingly unbelievable fuel mileage at Nashville

Joey Logano won his first points race of 2024 with the Ally 400 at Nashville Superspeedway by stretching his fuel tank 110 laps to the finish. NASCAR enthusiasts were amazed, pointing out the improbability of 18 gallons of fuel lasting that distance under racing conditions.

With just two laps left of the planned 300, Austin Cindric's spin brought out a caution, pushing the race into NASCAR overtime of 40 minutes. Ironically, it was #2's teammate from Team Penske, Joey Logano, who eventually won the race. Unlike other drivers, Logano managed to conserve enough fuel to fend off competition through five overtime to secure the win at Nashville.

The #22 Team Penske driver, Joey Logano, made his final fuel tank last for 110 laps around the 1.33-mile superspeedway, nearly 30 laps beyond the furthest estimates of a NASCAR Cup Series car's fuel capacity. As Logano circled the final laps on the concrete oval, the fuel light in his Ford flickered on as he approached Turn 3, and the engine gave a sputter on the backstretch. Despite these signs, Logano managed to push his car across the finish line, with the help of 31 extra caution laps that helped extend what was supposed to be an 85-lap tank at most.

In the post-race interview, when asked how he pulled off this feat, Logano responded with disbelief (via The Tennessean),

"Honestly, I don't know the (fuel) numbers and what's going on. I laugh because (crew chief) Paul (Wolfe) asked me what I thought. I said, 'I don't know. I don't have a computer in front of me.' This one just takes the whole crew to do it."

Talking about the event, a fan on X (formerly Twitter) posted,

"Joey Logano went 110 laps on fuel. On a 1.33 mile track, that's 146.3 miles. Assuming the 18 gallon tank was packed full, he needed to average 8.13 miles per gallon to make it to the finish. That's absolutely insane, even with the amount of cautions," they wrote.

Some fans took to the comments section and responded with their reactions and theories:

"Must have had Ecoboost on," a fan said.
"In other words, someone has some explaining to do," another confused fan wrote.
"They only filled up 13 gallons though...," another one remarked.
"He had a bigger tank," speculated another.

Joey Logano's driver standings position after Ally 400 win

Joey Logano's victory at the Ally 400 in Nashville earned him 40 points and also confirmed his spot in the playoffs. The win pushed him to P14 in the driver standings with 470 points. However, Joey Logano still trails the points leader, Kyle Larson, by 194 points. So far this season, he has secured one win, landed in the top-5 three times, and achieved six top-10 finishes.

Next up, Joey Logano is set to hit the streets for the Grant Park 165 at the Chicago Street race. Last year, he started and finished in the top ten, coming in eighth after starting ninth on this urban track. It'll be interesting to see if his car can maintain its impressive fuel efficiency in the Windy City.
