Ahead of his Double effort this weekend, Kyle Larson made headlines after qualifying in 5th place for his first ever Indy 500 run. On May 26th, Larson would be running in the Indy 500 and the Coca-Cola 600 on the same day, a feat that hasn't been attempted in a long time.
And because of the star power behind his name and because of the way his Indy 500 run is shaping up to be, Larson has won over the fans at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
This was something that former NASCAR driver Jeff Burton recently described to Steve Letarte, who asked Burton about the feel in the stands when Larson made that qualifying lap.
"I will say this, the fans are pulling for him and you can hear it. When he ran that lap in qualifying, the place erupted. And in fairness, like that's a very positive crowd. They cheer for everybody. Somebody runs a good lap, they get excited about it. They're there for that event. But there's a vibe coming from the fans to Kyle Larson that is exceptionally positive," Burton described the occassion.
But it's not just the fans or former drivers that Larson has talking about him, anticipating what all he could achieve in his Double Duty.
The President of NASCAR also spoke highly of the 2021 Cup champion recently.
Steve Phelps believes Kyle Larson can actually win the Double
Speaking on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio recently, Steve Letarte, the President of NASCAR, opened up on his views on Kyle Larson and all that he can achieve on May 26th.
Phelps deemed Larson "a generational driver" who is "just that good." To him, Larson is the kind of driver who loves to races and one who wins in everything and in doing that remains nonchalant and humble.
He then touched on the prospect of Larson running the Double and his chances of going all the way in both the races.
Phelps spoke of Larson, "I think the Double is unique, we’ve had drivers do it in the past. I would suggest, this isn’t hyperbole or me promoting the Kyle Larson deal or the Double, I think he has as good of a shot as anyone to win it, right? How cool would that be? He wins the Indy 500 and then turns around and wins the Coke 600?"
As per Phelps, the Hendrick Motorsports driver winning both the races would be "spectacular" as he claimed that if there's wheels on anything, "this kid" (Larson) can not only drive it but stand a chance to win in it.
